Men's Soccer Heads to Pitt for Non-Conference Match-Up

10.14.18 | Men's Soccer

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple University men's soccer squad is on the road again as they head to Pitt on Monday, Oct. 20th to face the Panthers. The non-conference match-up is set for 7:00 p.m. at Ambrose Urbanic Field, and will be streamed live on the ACC Network.

Last Time Out
> The Owls are coming off of a heartbreaking 3-2 overtime loss against American Athletic Conference opponent USF. It took five goals and almost 100 minutes of action to decide the match, but Bulls eventually took the golden goal in an extremely physical back-and-forth game.
> After USF scored first on a low driven free kick in the 40th minute, the Owls responded in the 69th minute of action with a beautiful header goal from Nick Sarver off of a Leandros Lillis corner kick. Six minutes later, the Owls struck again when Justin Hahn ripped a brilliant shot from outside of the 18 that floated upper 90, giving Temple the lead for the first time in the game with just 21 minutes left to play.
> USF retaliated with an equalizer in the 83rd minute, sending the two squads into overtime. The final goal of the match came 100 minutes in when the Bulls capitalized on a corner kick opportunity to earn the overtime conference victory.

Scouting the Owls
> Temple has compiled an overall record of 4-6-3, coming up 1-2-1 so far in American Athletic Conference play. Their AAC win came over nationally ranked UCF, dishing the Knights one of their two losses this entire season.
> Temple has not lost a match by anything but a one-goal deficit all season, and has not let their opponents score more than once in 11 of their 13 matches. Their recent five-goal game against USF marked the most goals scored in any of Temple's matches their season, and was good for a program-record sixth overtime contest this year.
> Junior Lukas Fernandes has been a key player in the Owls offense, leading the team in goals (4), assists (3) and points (11). He earned a spot on the AAC Weekly Honor Roll last week for his outstanding efforts on the pitch, helping the Owls to a 3-1 victory over NJIT and a 1-1 tie against Memphis. This marks the second time he has been recognized by the conference this season, after being named AAC Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 24th.
> Freshman Jalen Campbell and sophomore Justin Hahn also play pivotal roles in the Cherry and White offense, each compiling six points on the season from two goals and two assists apiece.
> Junior Simon Lefebvre has anchored the Owls in goal this season, thwarting 36 shots for a save percentage of .750 in 1019:51 minutes of action. He has allowed 12 goals in his 11 games played, posting a goals against average of 1.06.

Scouting Pitt
> The Panthers are led by head coach Jay Vidovich, who is in his third season at Pitt.
> Pitt enters the match with an overall record of 6-7 against a contingent of nationally ranked opponents, and have compiled a 2-4 tab so far in the ACC. They are coming off of a two game losing streak after falling to ACC foe Virginia Tech on Friday, 3-1. The only similar opponent the Panthers and the Owls have faced is VCU, who the Pitt downed 1-0 and Temple fell to, 0-1.
> Edward Kizza spearheads the Panther offense with 22 points from 11 goals in 13 games. Following Kizza is Javi Perez, who has netted three goals and two assists to earn eight points for Pitt. Alexander Dexter leads the team in assists with three, totaling three points this year.
> Johan Penaranda has started 12 games in net for the Panthers this season. In his 1044:49 minutes of action, he has saved 27 of the 93 shots that have come his way, earning him a save percentage of 0.643. Penaranda has compiled a record of 5-6, allowing 15 goals for a goals against average of 1.29 this season.

The Series
> The Owls lead the all-time series 9-3-1 over the Panthers, as the history of the match-up dates all the way back to 1968 when the teams met for the first time. Their most recent meeting was in 2016, when Temple came from behind to defeat Pitt, 2-1, after a 37-year hiatus from one another.
