Fencing Season Begins Saturday with the 39th Annual Temple Open

PHILADELPHIA - The time has come once again for the annual Temple Fencing Open, which returns to main campus for a 39th year on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 27-28 at the Liacouras Center. All the women's action will take place Saturday, with the Owls and over 30 other schools participating. For the full meet program, click HERE.
Temple head coach Dr. Nikki Franke, now in her 47th year at the helm, admits the tournament is always a lot of work to pull off but an exciting way to start each new year.
"We have about 500 fencers and approximately 30 schools represented at this year's Temple Open," said Franke. "It's a great way to start the season, to see where everyone is in a competitive setting. It's the beginning of the season for everyone and there's always a real air of excitement and anticipation surrounding the Temple Open."
The women's events will be held on Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., with the men's events following the same schedule on Sunday. The entire event is free to fans.
Last year, the Owls had nine finalists (top eight) overall with two second-place finishes. One of those was by returner Eva Hinds in sabre, who is a sophomore for Temple this year. Current redshirt junior Quinn Duwelius earned her best-ever Temple Open finish last season, advancing to the semifinals and tying for third in epee. Junior Kerry Plunkett tied for third in sabre for a second year in a row as a sophomore in 2017, and close behind her was current senior Jessica Rockford, who placed fifth. Junior Kennedy Lovelace took sixth in foil and junior Camille Simmons finished eighth in epee.
The Temple Open is one of just two chances Owl fans have to see their team on campus. In late February, the Temple Invitational in McGonigle Hall will close out the regular season for the Owls.
