PHILADELPHIA - After leading 2-1 with less than 20 minutes to play, Temple field hockey was edged 3-2 by visiting Georgetown (9-3, 2-2) in BIG EAST action. The Owls (2-10, 0-4) gave up a penalty stroke goal in the 53rd minute which proved to be the game-winner for the Hoyas.
Game Summary
> The start was fast and furious for both teams, with a 1-1 tie just two minutes in.
> Senior Jessika Daniels took a pass from junior Cristen Barnett and gave the Owls a 1-0 lead 25 seconds into the contest.
> A minute and a half later, Georgetown also scored on its first shot of the game, getting a penalty corner goal from Emily Fraser.
> In the 13th minute, a diving defensive save by freshman Claire Thomas kept the Hoyas from scoring.
> Not until the 25th minute did the tie get broken, with Temple freshman Tali Popinko getting an assist from redshirt freshman Grace Shanton for a 2-1 lead.
> The Owls' 2-1 lead lasted for over 25 minutes of game play until the Hoyas scored another penalty corner goal in the 52nd minute.
> Just a minute and a half later, Georgetown was awarded a penalty stroke and Fraser converted it for the 3-2 lead.
> Temple had two penalty corner chances in the final two minutes but had one shot saved and another go wide.
Individual Highlights
> Senior goalkeeper Chloe Johnson made five saves for the Owls, and the defensive save by Thomas was the first of her career.
> Popinko's goal was her first for the Owls, and Daniels had her first of the season and third of her career.
Postgame Quotes from Head Coach Marybeth Freeman
> "The game always has ebbs and flows, momentum shifts. I think the fact that they scored off of two corners and a stroke lends us to believe that we're doing some good things on the field. We may have to work a little bit more on the set pieces but to make them have to earn it versus giving it up so freely I think was a positive for us. Now we just have to be able to finish and execute on our set pieces."
> "You never want a stroke or a set piece like that to be the deciding factor, but that's the sport. There was a turnover from us in the backfield and Chloe came out and there was a foul on her but that's what happens - you have to make a play on the ball and be aggressive and make them earn it and she did that, but they were able to capitalize."
