Women's Basketball Stays with #24/22 Miami in Loss

MIAMI, Fla. — The Temple women's basketball team hung tough with #24/22 Miami, but the hot-shooting Hurricanes got the win, 73-61, in the final game of the Miami Thanksgiving Classic. Temple dips to 2-4 with the loss, while the Canes improve to 6-1.

Keys to the Game
> Miami shot 47% from the field, and from three, burying nine from long-range to quash any potential Temple surges.
> The Owls made eight threes, but shot just 26% (8-31) from long-range.
> Temple out-rebounded Miami, but the Canes shot over 50% in the second half to seal the win.

Individual Highlights
> Graduate student Alliya Butts had another solid stat line, finishing with 18 points, five rebounds (tying a career high), five assists, and three steals. She earned All-Tournament honors for her play in the two games.
> Sophomore Mia Davis rang up her third double-double of the season, finishing with 19 points and 11 rebounds, both team highs.
> Senior Lena Niang and sophomore Desiree Oliver each added six points in the loss.
> Sophomore Emani Mayo notched five points with three steals, while junior Shantay Taylor finished the box score with a career-best eight rebounds.

First Quarter
> Both teams held slim leads in the first frame, which featured eight ties and four lead changes.
> Threes from Butts and Davis gave Temple two point edges, the last being a 14-12 advantage with under two to play.
> Miami took over the lead down the stretch, however, scoring five unanswered, three from the free throw line, to lead 17-14 after one.

Second Quarter
> Two buckets from Mayo opened the second quarter, as Temple cut it to one, 19-18.
> After the teams traded scores, Miami surged with five unanswered to make it 30-23.
> Temple got the lead down to five, but the Hurricanes hit a pair of threes to close the half with their largest lead of the game, 36-27.

Third Quarter
> Temple got the lead down to six points with hot three point shooting, making it 46-40 with seven to play.
> Miami answered by getting hot from three as well, pushing the lead to 47-37 with 2:45 left.
> Temple got a Davis three late in the frame to close the gap to eight, but a pair of free throws from Miami set the score to 55-45 after three.

Fourth Quarter
> Temple started the fourth off fast, cutting the lead to 55-48.
> Temple well in the frame, but Miami countered, shooting 53.8%, answering every Temple surge.
> The Owls got the lead under 10 several times, but in the end, time ran out for the Owls, as Miami held on for the victory.
