Fencing's Malia Hee Wins Gold in Sabre at Penn State Garret Open
11.3.18 | Women's Fencing
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Without losing a single bout through three pool rounds and then working her way through the elimination bracket, Temple junior Malia Hee prevailed to win gold among 59 sabre fencers at the Penn State Garret Open. It was Hee's second win at the Penn State meet in three seasons, after also taking the title in 2016.
Meet Summary
> Hee, coming off a runner-up finish at last week's Temple Open, won a total of 15 bouts through the pool rounds earlier in the day before besting four competitors in the direct elimination rounds.
> In the quarterfinals, Hee came up against teammate Kerry Plunkett and won 15-10. Plunkett had advanced by virtue of an exciting, 15-14 win in the round of 16 and finished seventh overall.
> Foil freshman Aryana Abtin was the Owls' next best finisher, tying for 14th in a field of 65 fencers.
> Sophomore Kennedy Lovelace tied for 21st in foil and senior Auset Muhammad placed 28th.
> Team captain and senior Blessing Olaode placed 20th in sabre.
> The Owls' top epee fencer was senior Ally Micek who finished 24th, followed closely by sophomore Marielle Luke in 26th.
Quotable
> "Malia came in today very focused and knew the exact mindset she wanted to compete with. She knew what she wanted to accomplish and the results show that she did that." - Assistant Coach/Sabre Coach Josh Herring
>Â "For it being our second tournament, we continue to see improvement and growth which is what early season tournaments are all about." - Head Coach Dr. Nikki Franke
> "Kerry (Plunkett) was a finalist along with Malia, and Aryana (Abtin) was a semifinalist. That was a great showing for all of them. Malia was very relaxed and confident. We've been working on consistency and she showed that all day. Aryana is getting used to collegiate fencing and did a good job. She just needs to work on adjusting more quickly to situations but that's coming along and she fenced very tough." - Head Coach Dr. Nikki Franke
