Fencing Looks to Keep Momentum Going at Duke Invitational on Sunday

2.10.18 | Women's Fencing

DURHAM, N.C. - Maintaining its national ranking in the latest College Fencing 360 Coaches Poll, the seventh-ranked Temple fencing team is back in action at the Duke Invitational on Sunday, Feb. 11. The Owls (22-8) will fence host #10 Duke (15-6) along with North Carolina (16-5) and Brandeis (15-10).

Meet Information
> The day will be a quick one for the Owls, who start with UNC at 9 a.m., then fence Duke at 10 a.m. and finish up with Brandeis at 11 a.m.
> Temple has fenced both Duke and UNC already this season, beating the Blue Devils 16-11 at the Philadelphia Invitational on Jan. 20, and besting UNC 17-10 at the Penn State Invitational a week prior.
> Duke is three spots behind Temple in the polls at #10, while UNC is receiving the second-most votes of teams outside the Top 10.
> The Owls were meant to face #1 Notre Dame, but the Fighting Irish were unable to travel due to snow.

Scouting the Owls
> Temple is coming off a big weekend after going 8-2 overall over two days at the Northwestern Duals. The Owls' only losses were to #1 Notre Dame and #5 Ohio State, and both matches were close (15-12).
> There was extra excitement on the second day at Northwestern, as the first win of the day over Air Force marked the 800th career win for Temple head coach Nikki Franke.
> Freshman Eva Hinds (sabre) finished with a team-best record of 19-3 over two days at Northwestern.
> The sabre squad is 27-3 overall this season to lead the Owls, and went 5-0 on day one at Northwestern which included a win over #1 Notre Dame.
> Temple last competed at the Duke Invitational in 2016, beating UNC, Duke and Brandeis while falling to Notre Dame and Penn State.

Quotable
> "We're looking forward to the rematches with Duke and UNC. It will be a good chance to see how much we've improved since our earlier matches against them. They're both very good teams and we have to come out strong if we hope to win again." - Temple head coach Dr. Nikki Franke
