Men's Crew Opens Spring Season on Saturday

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple men's crew team is set to open their spring campaign this weekend in San Diego, Calif. after a dedicated offseason. Head Coach Brian Perkins and the rest of his squad have high hopes for this season, building on a solid fall campaign and the team's commitment to success.

"Our goals are what they always have been—we want to win," said Perkins. "We finished last year with four medals in the Dad Vail Regatta. We had 20 freshmen that are now experienced sophomores, and have brought in an intense freshmen class. We are really excited about our chances to thrive this year in all of our events."

Last year, the Owls performed strongly at the Dad Vail Regatta where they had six boats enter and four of them medal. Out of 105 schools, only one other school had boats in both the Freshman 8 and Freshman 4 finals, and they medaled in both. Since then, they have been working vigorously in the offseason to reach even higher strides this year.

"We have done a lot of training this offseason," Perkins explained. "During our indoor season, we saw a lot of great technical strides as we watched their numbers improve. The technical focus has really translated into the water and the boats are moving faster than they were before."

While the 50 plus-man roster has shown great progress in the offseason, a few athletes stand out to Perkins that have shown substantial improvement since the fall.

"Team-wide, we have seen a great deal of improvement and everyone is doing really well," Perkins said. "But, sophomores Nicholas Carbonaro and Alex DeNolfo have really stood out. They are both in the Varsity 8 after just one year at Temple. They both came in with little rowing experience, but are extremely coachable and accomplished guys. They are really making the boat go and are very exciting to watch."

The Owls have already competed in scrimmages this season that have gone well, really making them anxious to get on the water and compete this weekend.

"The team has shown so much heart. We have addressed last year's mistakes and are ready to get out there and race. This program is on a tremendous upswing—all of the coaches and athletes are back and ready to show how hard we have worked. We are all on the same page with our goals, and we really want to win."

The Owls will compete this Saturday and Sunday at the San Diego Crew Classic.
