3.23.18 | Women's Fencing

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Malia Hee, a Temple University sophomore, has been named the recipient of the Elite 90 award for the 2018 NCAA Division I Women's Fencing Championship.

Hee, majoring in advertising, currently carries a perfect 4.0 GPA. She was presented with the award during the NCAA Fencing banquet at the conclusion of the two days of women's fencing at Penn State University.

The Elite 90, an award founded by the NCAA, recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the national championship level in his or her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers. The Elite 90 is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA's championships.

Eligible student-athletes are sophomores or above who have participated in their sport for at least two years with their school. They must be an active member of the team, traveling and a designated member of the squad size at the championship. All ties are broken by the number of credits completed.

Hee is coming a 13th-place finish at the NCAA Championships over the past few days, and an impressive showing at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional on March 10 where she tied for first in sabre and finished second based on touches. She went 55-22 in dual meets, helping sabre to many big wins over the course of the season. Hee went 11-2 on day one of the Philadelphia Invitational, going 3-0 against both Duke and Northwestern. She finished 14-4 overall over two days at the Northwestern Duals, and was 8-3 at the Temple Invitational with a 3-0 record vs. #5 Princeton and 2-1 marks against #3 Penn State and #8 Penn.
