Men's Crew Wins Five Medals at Kerr Cup

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple men's crew team's medal haul at the 2018 Kerr Cup featured four golds, one silver, and one bronze, wrapping up a successful day of racing on the Schuylkill River. The Owls won gold in the third varsity eight, freshman eight, and lightweight four, a silver in the lightweight four, and bronze in the varsity eight.
VARSITY EIGHT
> It was a bronze medal finish for the first varsity eight boat, as Temple recorded a time of 6:23.14 to finish ahead of Virginia, Marist, and Drexel.
> The Owls were just behind St. Joseph's and Delaware in the final standings.
> Temple opened the heats with a 6:23.81 to top Virginia, BC, San Diego, and St. Mary's by nearly eight seconds.
> In the semifinals, the Owls notched another victory, as their time of 6:24.17 out-paced Delaware, St. Joseph's, West Point, BC, and Delaware.
SECOND VARSITY EIGHT
> The Owls were just outside the medals in the 2V, taking fourth in 6:34.41, missing the podium by just two seconds.
> Temple grabbed a heat victory to advance through to the finals, as their time of 6:35.11 outpaced UC San Diego, Virginia, Trinity, Rutgers, and La Salle.
THIRD VARSITY EIGHT
> Temple grabbed another medal in the third varsity final, as the team took third place in 6:43.52.Â
> The cherry and white were just behind Drexel and St. Joseph's in the finals, finishing ahead of BC, Virginia, and Delaware.
> The Owls opened the racing with a second place finish in their heat, recording a time of 6:41.31, narrowly off the pace of Drexel's 6:39.13.
FRESHMAN EIGHT
> A gold medal finish in the freshman eight race saw the Owls top rival Drexel by 1.88 seconds.
> Temple finished in 6:40.18, ahead of the Dragons, Virginia, Bucknell, La Salle, and Virginia.
> Temple qualified to the finals with a 15+ second victory in the heats, topping La Salle, Virginia, West Point, and NYU with a winning time of 6:46.04.
LIGHTWEIGHT FOURS
> Temple swept the top two spots in the lightweight four finals only races.
> The Owls "A" boat and "B" boat were neck-in-neck, with the "A" crew making out a victory by just three tenths of a second.
> The "A" boat finished in 7:00.11, while the "B" boat clocked in at 7:00.44, both crews nearly nine seconds ahead of third place Delaware.
FRESHMAN FOUR
> Temple finished just off the podium, with a fifth place finish, recording a time of 7:59.01 in the finals.
> The Owls took second in their opening heat, tallying a time of 8:07.39, ahead of Mary Washington and West Point.
UP NEXT
> Temple's lightweight eight and freshman eight will race in the Knecht Cup at Lake Mercer in West Windsor, N.J. on Sunday.
