Gymnastics' Gipson and Field Hockey's Reed to Attend NCAA Career in Sports Forum

5.21.18 | Field Hockey, General, Women's Gymnastics

PHILADELPHIA - Two Temple University student-athletes are among just 200 nationwide who have been selected to attend the NCAA's Career in Sports Forum from May 31-June 3 in Indianapolis, Ind.

Graduated senior Sahara Gipson of gymnastics and rising junior Lucy Reed of field hockey were both selected to participate in this year's forum.

The Career in Sports Forum, an annual educational forum hosted by the NCAA, brings together student-athletes to learn and explore potential careers in sports, with the primary focus on college athletics. This unique, four-day forum is designed to assist student-athletes in charting their career paths, as well as provide an opportunity to network and learn from current athletics professionals.

The cutting-edge topics covered by industry experts include: how personal values intersect with career opportunities, how behavioral styles impact individual effectiveness, the key professional and career development information to assist with transition from a student-athlete to a professional, and the role of the college coach or athletics administrator. Participants will network with peers, as well as key decision-makers at the campus, conference and national level of college athletics.

Gipson, a co-captain for gymnastics as a senior this past season, earned ECAC First Team All-Vault honors and ECAC Second Team All-Floor Exercise honors. She earned four individual vault titles and advanced to the NCAA Regionals as a vault specialist. Gipson graduated earlier this month with a degree in media studies and production, and was named to Temple's Athletic Director's Honor Roll.

"I am excited to attend this year's Career in Sports Forum because it is a great opportunity to build my network," said Gipson. "I just graduated, and the next chapter of my life has officially begun. I am interested in learning more about the sports world both on a professional and collegiate level. Sports and entertainment have always interested me and it will be a great opportunity to meet, learn from and connect with people who are already in the industry. At the conference I hope to gain insight of the industry, explore possible job opportunities and network with other student-athletes who share the same passions as me."

Reed is one of the leading returners for the field hockey team next season after scoring two goals as a sophomore. With a GPA of over 3.5, she was named to Temple's President's Honor Roll this year as well as to the Zag Field Hockey / NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad for a second year in a row. Reed is an active member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), and served as the editor of its newsletter this past spring.

"I'm extremely excited to have been given this opportunity to learn from so many professionals within the NCAA alongside other student-athletes with similar potential career goals," said Reed. "I'm looking forward to gaining knowledge and perspective from this experience to develop both personally and professionally while representing Temple."
