Volleyball Falls to LMU and Hofstra on Day Two of Hilton Penn's Landing Temple Invitational

PHILADELPHIA - An exciting comeback attempt fell short for Temple volleyball in the final match of the Hilton Penn's Landing Temple Invitational, and the Owls (1-2) ultimately lost a pair of matches to LMU and Hofstra on Saturday. Temple took LMU to four sets and Hofstra to five, crawling out of a two-set hole in the latter.
TEMPLE VS. HOFSTRA: Hofstra 3, Temple 2
> Hofstra served up nine aces through two sets in getting wins of 25-16 and 25-18.
> The Owls turned it up defensively in their comeback attempt and came up with wins of 26-24 and 25-19 to even the match at two sets apiece, but the Pride put the fifth and final set out of reach early on.
> Sophomore Katerina Papazoglou led the Owls with a double-double of 14 kills, 13 digs and a hitting percentage of .225.
> Temple setters Hannah Vandegrift (senior) and Tyler Lindgren (freshman) also notched double-doubles. Vandegrift added 13 digs to 23 assists while Lindgren recorded 12 digs and 19 assists.
> Senior Carla Guennewig tallied a match-high eight blocks for the Owls.
SET ACTION VS. HOFSTRA
> The Owls held a slim lead in the early going of set one against Hofstra, but the Pride had the score tied by the midway point.
> With strong serving, Hofstra rattled off six straight points and later won the set, 25-16.
> Papazoglou had a strong first set with four kills, three digs and a hitting percentage of .375.
> Temple twice pulled within a point of the Pride midway through the second set, but Hofstra held off the Owls and closed out with a 4-1 run to win the set, 25-18.
> The Owls out-hit Hofstra .296 to to .273 in the second set, but the Pride served up six aces compared to none for Temple.
> The third set was mostly tight throughout, but the Owls stepped it up defensively and forced longer rallies, leading to a two or three-point lead much of the way.
> Temple looked to be closing out the set easily with a 24-20 lead, but needed to get it done with extra points after the Pride tied it up at 24-all.
> Graduate student Iva Deak gave the Owls another set point at 25-24 with a kill, and block by freshman Peyton Boyd gave Temple a 26-24 win.
> Down 14-10 in the fourth set, the Owls scored six straight points for a 16-14 lead.
> That run would prove to be the catalyst for success the rest of the way as Temple got two kills from junior Dana Westfield in a 4-0 run to close out the set with a 25-19 win.
> Temple forced nine attack errors on Hofstra with six blocks of its own, while committing just four attack errors and limited the Pride to three blocks.
> Hofstra came out strong and put the fifth set out of reach early with a 12-3 lead.
> The Owls made a short run to get it to 13-7, but back-to-back Hofstra kills gave the Pride a 15-7 win in the set and a 3-2 win for the match.
> Through five sets, Hofstra served up 10 aces compared to two for the Owls, getting nine of those aces in the first two sets.
TEMPLE VS. LMU: LMU 3, Temple 1
> Despite a first set victory, the Owls dropped Saturday's opener, 3-1, to LMU.
> Temple won the first set 25-18, but LMU rattled off three-straight wins, 25-18, 25-23, and 25-20 to close out the win.
> Both teams hit well, LMU at .300 and Temple around .285, but the Owls were hampered by 13 serve errors in the match.
> Freshman Miray Bolukbasi led the Owls with 12 kills, adding nine digs and three aces.
> Boyd had nine kills, hitting a team-high .412.
> Papazoglou finished with six kills without an error, while Deak had five kills.
> Vandegrift finished with 29 assists and five digs, while Lindgren had 11.
> Senior Mia Heirakuji led the defense with 11 digs, while graduate student Irem Asci added eight.
SET ACTION VS. LMU
> In the first set, the Owls came out on fire, hitting .368 while holding the Lions to a .029 attack.
> Temple quickly took hold of the set, cruising through to a 25-18 win.
> LMU rebounded in the second, hitting .294, while Temple attacked at just .185.
> Trailing 7-4, the Lions tied the match at 11-11, and pushed on to a 15-12 advantage. From there, LMU outscored Temple, 10-6 to even things at 1-1.
> Both teams hit over .475 in the third set, but it was LMU who grabbed the tight 25-23 win.
> The third set featured 14 ties and seven lead changes, and at the end, LMU strung together the final two points to take a 2-1 match lead.
> LMU out-hit Temple .379 to .200 in the final set to earn the match win.
> The Owls kept it close, but LMU held a slim lead throughout and finished the match with a 25-20 set four win.

> Temple will play at the 2018 Penn State Invitational next weekend.
> The Owls will open up with the hosts on Friday night and play Texas A&M and Indiana on Saturday.
