Women’s Soccer Falls 1-0 at NJIT

9.14.18 | Women's Soccer

Teaneck, N.J. - Temple women's soccer (3-5) fell 1-0 to NJIT (5-2-1) after the Highlanders netted the game-winning goal in the 89th minute of play.

Keys to the Match
> Defender Kat McCoy executed a well-timed tackle in the 51st minute to clear a dangerous cross. McCoy broke up the play and prevented a quality Highlanders' goal opportunity when she cut off a sliding NJIT player.
> In the 88th minute, goalie Morgan Basileo tallied a big save to keep the match locked at 0-0. Basileo connected with the soaring shot by NJIT's Arianna Gerber and tipped it over the crossbar.
> NJIT's game-winning goal came in the 89th minute. Gerber beat her defender and delivered the deciding goal.

Match Notes
> The Owls' best look to score in the first half came on a set piece. Sophomore Natalie Druehl took the free kick and placed the ball in the middle of the box. The shot bounced around between multiple players and found Julia Dolan. Dolan settled the ball, but was swarmed by NJIT defenders before she could capitalize on the opportunity.
> In the 82nd minute, Marissa DiGenova had a fantastic look to give the Owls a chance to pull ahead. DiGenova ripped a bending shot from the top of the box, but NJIT's Katrina Nguyen-DeMary had a defensive safe to thwart the attempt.
> The last 45 minutes of competition were marked by an increase in production and aggression from both offenses. Between the 74th and 76th minutes, the Owls had three corner kick opportunities, but were unable to capitalize on them. DiGenova's 82nd minute attempt and a header from Morgan Morocco in the 88th minute threatened to put Temple on the board.

Quotable
> "I thought [we] did a good job on the road," said head coach Seamus O'Connor. "We dealt well with the corners and our defensive shape was really good. Tonight, we had more dangerous balls in the box. Going forward, we need to add the finishing touch to our possession. That's the next challenge for us."
