Women's Basketball Drops One-Point Heartbreaker at Duquesne

PITTSBURGH — A tight game came down to the final possession, but in the end, Duquesne won the Pennsylvania city battle, as the Dukes outlasted the Temple women's basketball team, 54-53. The loss dips the Owls to 4-8 overall, while Duquesne improves to 6-7.

Keys to the Game
> A tie game heading in the fourth quarter saw the Owls go up one on on two separate occasions, but trailing 54-53 with under seven seconds to play, Temple couldn't get the game winner to fall.
> The Owls finished with an overall shooting advantage, 34.5% to 31.0%, but went just 20% from long range.
> The Dukes won the battle on the boards, 40-34. while both teams turned the ball over 18 times.
> Temple led by two at halftime, but Duquesne tied it up after a back-and-forth third quarter.

Individual Highlights
> Graduate student Alliya Butts led Temple with 15 points, three assists, and three steals.
> Freshman Marissa Mackins tallied 14 points, while senior Shantay Taylor added eight points and five rebounds.
> Freshman Alexa Williamson finished with six points, four rebounds, and two steals, while sophomore Desiree Oliver added six points and five boards. 
> Sophomore Breanna Perry tallied season bests of nine rebounds and three blocks.

First Quarter
> Temple jumped out to an 8-4 lead as Mackins hit two from deep early on.
> Duquesne scored the next five points to go up 9-7 with just over two minutes to play.
> The Owls then held the Dukes without a point, while Mackins keyed a 5-0 run to give Temple a 13-9 lead after one.

Second Quarter
> Both teams traded 8-0 runs in the second quarter. The Owls surge, sparked by eight points from Butts, gave the Owls a 25-15 lead.
> Duquesne answered with eight unanswered of their own, cutting the Temple lead down to two, at 25-23.

Third Quarter
> Both teams picked up the offensive pace in the third quarter, but Duquesne got two back, outscoring the Owls 19-17 to even things up.
> Temple led by four, before Duquesne got hot from three, going 3-for-4 over the next three minutes.
> The lead changed hands three more times, before the Owls tied things up at 42-42 with a Taylor putback to close the frame.

Fourth Quarter
> Duquesne scored the first four points of the frame, making Temple play from behind much of the period. 
> Back-to-back buckets from Oliver and Taylor gave Temple its first lead of the frame at 51-50.
> Duquesne took over the lead, but Temple answered as Butts found Williamson under the basket, again putting the Owls up by one (53-52).
> Temple fouled on the next two Duquesne possessions, with the Dukes making one-of-two on each trip to the line, the last of which make it 54-53 with 6.7 on the clock.
> The Owls had a shot at one final play, but a jumper fell short at the buzzer and Duquesne got the one point win.
