No. 10 Fencing Goes 3-2 at Philadelphia Invitational; Beats Two Top 10s

1.20.19 | Women's Fencing

PHILADELPHIA - A 15-12 win over No. 5 Ohio State was the highlight of the day for 10th-ranked Temple fencing, as the Owls went 3-2 overall including the victory over the Buckeyes and another over No. 9 Penn. Temple (9-5) suffered its only losses to No. 2 Northwestern and No. 3 Columbia.

Meet Summary
> Due to a weather-altered schedule, Temple did not face No. 1 Notre Dame as originally planned. The Owls also fenced NYU in place of UNC.
> The Owls lost 15-12 to the second-ranked Northwestern Wildcats to start the day, but the sabre squad earned a 6-3 win.
> All three squads beat both Ohio State and Penn, with the win over the Buckeyes coming in the day's second match.
> After a 17-10 victory over NYU, Temple faced the host Penn Quakers and won 16-11. Sabre won 6-3, with both foil and epee winning 5-4.
> The third-ranked Columbia Lions bested Temple 17-10 in the Owls' final match of the day.

Individual Highlights
> The sabre squad's Malia Hee and Kerry Plunkett turned in the best records of the day, going 10-3 and 9-3, respectively. Plunkett went 3-0 against both Northwestern and Ohio State, while Hee had winning records against those squads before going a perfect 3-0 vs. Penn.
> Ally Micek had a strong day for the epee squad with a record of 9-6, getting a pair of wins against Northwestern, Ohio State, NYU and Columbia.
> The foil squad was led by Kennedy Lovelace and Aryana Abtin who both went 6-6. Lovelace went 2-1 against OSU and Penn, while Abtin did so against Northwestern and OSU.
> Fiona Fong went 6-5 for epee with 2-1 wins vs. both OSU and Penn. Also for epee, Camille Simmons posted a 3-0 mark vs. NYU, as did Blessing Olaode for sabre.

Quotable
"It had been awhile since we'd beaten Ohio State and Penn, so that was a great result for us. The experience from last week (at Penn State) definitely carried over and made us better this week. Every match was competitive and the girls really hung tough and fought through. There were a couple touches that could have gone either way and that can make all the difference. Overall, we're very pleased." - Head Coach Dr. Nikki Franke
