Track & Field Set to Compete at Villanova Invitational

PHILADELPHIA – After breaking the DMR school record last weekend, the Temple University track and field team looks to build off of its momentum as it heads to the Villanova Invitational this Saturday, Feb. 2. The majority of the squad will return to the Ocean Breeze Track and Field Complex to compete on the 200m banked track on a rolling schedule starting at 4 p.m. The Owls will also send four student-athletes to Ursinus College to compete in the 5K at the Frank Colden Invitational in Collegeville, Pa.
 
About the Villanova Invitational
> Sophomore Sydney Williams will get the meet started in the 60m hurdle prelims. Following the hurdles, Williams will compete in the 60m dash accompanied by sophomore Candus Burks and freshman Marissa White. Burks will also participate in the triple jump later in the day.
> Next, freshman Keegan Simonsen will solely represent the Owls in the mile.
> The 400m will feature sophomores Jaida Fenn and Mallorie Smith along with junior Madison Beecher. Following, senior Ashton Dunkley will race the 800m with teammate McKenzie Gelvin.
> Four Owls will race the 200m with Williams, White, Beecher and sophomore Aisha Brown all competing in the event. To conclude the day, Temple will put two 4x400m relays on the track.
 
About the Frank Colden Invitational
> Senior Katie Leisher, junior Kira Von Ehren, sophomore Michelle Joyce and sophomore Lucy Jones will head to Ursinus College to race the 5000m. The Owls will race the 5K for the first time this season in the efforts obtain qualifying marks for the American Athletic Conference Indoor Championship meet.
> The 5K is set to begin in Collegeville, Pa. at 10:40 a.m.
 
Last Time Out
> The Owls are looking to build off of a strong showing last weekend at the Columbia Challenge. On day one, the DMR of sophomore Helene Gottlieb, junior Millie Howard, White and junior Grace Moore shattered the school record, earning fourth overall with a time of 11:23.03.
> Howard toed the starting line for the Owls, running a speedy 1200m with a split of 3:29.4. Propelling the momentum, White took the handoff to break into a 400m, which she split at 56.08. Gottlieb ran the third leg, racing the 800m portion in 2:10.5. Moore anchored the event, closing the gap with a 4:46.9 mile split.
> On day two, the Owls got started in the 3000m college race. Von Ehren ran her second 3000m in Cherry and White in 9:39.50, shaving nearly eight seconds off of her time from earlier in the season. The junior's personal best was good to place second in the college section. Leisher finished next for Temple, placing ninth with a time of 9:59.36. Right behind her was Jones, who broke her PR by over a second to finish 10th with a time of 10:02.24.
> Moore had an extremely impressive showing in the 3000m college run. Surpassing her previous personal record of 9:39.29 by almost 13 seconds, she finished third overall in 9:26.12.
> White continues to shine week after week in the 400m. Since her first race at Temple, her time in the event has continued to drop as she improves in the event. Last weekend on the track, the freshman rounded the track twice in 56.97, breaking 57 flat for the first time in Cherry and White to improve last weeks' time of 57.29. Smith also ran her first 400m of the season in 58.65.
> Brown put on an impressive performance in the high jump, clearing 1.75m. This jump was good for an indoor and season personal-best and earned her third place overall.
 
On the Board
> Two Owls are currently sitting in the top-10 in the American Athletic Conference standings for the 800m. After running a time of 2:10.71 at the Penn 8-Team Select, Gottlieb ranks second in the AAC. Joining her at the top of the conference is Howard, who ranks sixth with a time of 2:11.82.
> Moore, Howard and Von Ehren have made their mark in the conference standings for the mile. Moore currently leads the conference by almost five seconds with a time of 4:48.90. Howard joins her in the top five, sitting in third with a time of 4:53.14. Von Ehren currently sits ninth in the conference with a time of 4:57.39.
> Asserting her dominance, Moore also leads the league in the 3000m with a time of 9:26.12. Von Ehren joins her in the rankings at fourth with a time of 9:39.50. Leisher also made her way into the top 10 with a time of 9:59.36.
> Brown currently sits third in the AAC for the indoor high jump after clearing 1.75m last weekend.
> After breaking the school record last weekend, Temple's distance medley relay now leads the conference by almost 25 seconds.
