Visiting Tulane Uses Third Quarter Run to Top Women's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA — Visiting Tulane used a game-changing 15-0 run to close the third quarter, as the Green Wave topped the Temple women's basketball team 66-57 at McGonigle Hall on Tuesday night. The Owls dip to 4-10 overall (0-2 American) with the loss, while Tulane improves to 12-3 overall, 2-0 in conference play.
Keys to the Game
> The game featured six lead changes and four ties, before Tulane turned a close four-point contest into a 19-point blow out with 15 unanswered points to close the third quarter.
> Temple rallied to out-score the Green Wave 23-13 in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough to overcome the slow third quarter.
> Tulane out-shot Temple 44.2% to 37.7%, including a massive 58.8% (10-17) in the pivotal third frame.
Individual Highlights
> A pair of rookies led the Owls in scoring for the first time this season, as Alexa Williamson tallied 16 points, adding three steals and three blocks, while classmate Marissa Mackins added 12 points, four assists, and four steals.
> Sophomore Emani Mayo tallied 11 points, six rebounds, and four assists.
> Graduate student Alliya Butts and sophomore Mia Davis added eight points each to round out the scoring.
> Butts added a pair of steals in the win, with her first of the game making her Temple's all-time career steals leader.

> Tulane jumped out to a 10-4 early lead in the frame, before Temple locked down on defense.
> The Owls held the Green Wave scoreless for nearly five minutes, while going on a 6-0 run to tie things at 10-10.
> Tulane got one right before the buzzer, however, taking a 12-10 lead after one.
Second Quarter
> Tulane's lead grew by one in the third, edging the Owls 13-12.
> Trailing 17-12, Temple used a 7-0 run, capped by a Shantay Taylor putback to go up 19-17.
> The lead changed hands twice more, before the Green Wave closed the quarter with a 4-0 edge to lead 25-22.
Third Quarter
> Tulane sealed the game with a huge third quarter run, rattling off 15 unanswered points to take over.
> From the start of the frame, the pace picked up, with the teams trading scores until it was 38-34 Tulane.
> That's when the Green Wave took over, shutting Temple down offensively, while going on a 15-0 run to balloon the lead from four to 19, ending the quarter 53-34 in favor of the visitors.

> After the lead grew to 21 points, Temple put on full court pressure to close the gap.
> The Owls got as close as seven points, but despite a 23-13 advantage in the quarter, the Tulane lead stood.
