TAMPA— Temple women's soccer (4-9-4, 2-5-1 AAC) faced USF (10-3, 5-1 AAC) on the road at Corbett Stadium on Sunday afternoon, ultimately falling 2-0 to the Bulls.
How it Happened
> The Owls' defense was tested early by the Bulls. In the 8th minute of play, USF sent a dangerous corner kick into the box, but junior Djavon Dupree made a goal line clearance to extinguish the threat.
> The Bulls got on the board first in the 25th minute. Senior Evelyne Viens found the back of the net for USF, breaking the American Athletic Conference career goals record in the process.
> Senior Morgan Basileo was key between the posts for the Cherry and White. The captain made a big save in the 42nd minute to keep the Owls within one score of the Bulls. USF's Brianna Blethen ripped a shot from outside the box, but Basileo leaped up to punch the attempt over the crossbar.
> In the 50th minute, the Owls got out on a breakaway as Gabriela Johnson threaded a ball to a streaking Morgan Morocco. Morocco charged toward the goal, but the USF keeper, Sydney Martinez, came off her line to stop Temple's momentum.
> Temple continued its pursuit of an equalizer in the 55th minute. Several Owls were involved in the attack that was spurred by Dupree's takeaway. The play resulted in the Cherry and White's best look on frame as Hailey Gutowski fired a shot, but Martinez pushed it out as the last second.
> USF doubled its lead in the 71st minute when Andrea Hauksdottir converted a penalty kick.
> Marissa DiGenova notched a strong look on goal for the Owls in the 81st minute. Gutowski's corner kick was deflected by a USF defender and she collected it back and found DiGenova at the edge of the box. DiGenova got past her defender and fired a shot, but it traveled wide left of the far post.
> In the final minute of play, Johnson made a run up the middle of the field and fed DiGenova on her right. DiGenova fired toward the left upper 90, but Martinez made a huge save to tip away the attempt. Gutowski got on the end of the deflection, but her shot went high of the target.
Match Notes
> Basileo tallied five saves on the afternoon against the Bulls, bringing her season total to 117.
> USF held the advantage over Temple in shots (13-8), shots on goal (7-1) and corners (6-3).
From the Coach
> "I'm extremely proud of the team's effort," said head coach Seamus O'Connor. "We created some really great quality chances on the offensive end, but it's frustrating that we couldn't put any of them away. We were disappointed at half-time because we knew we weren't playing USF the way we wanted to, so we made some adjustments and the players came out so much more aggressive and played great attacking soccer. I'm tremendously impressed with their effort today. They came out and competed down to the last minute."
