Cayet, Borger and Fernandes Earn AAC Weekly Nods After Another Undefeated Week
10.28.19 | Men's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA – After a huge 2-0 week that secured the Temple men's soccer team a spot in the AAC Championship field, three Owls earned accolades from the conference for the week of Oct. 21. Junior captain Pierre Cayet was named the AAC Defensive Player of the Week, sophomore Mickael Borger earned Rookie of the Week honors and senior captain Lukas Fernandes landed a spot on the Weekly Honor Roll for their contributions to Temple's 2-1 victories over both Louisville and UConn. Cayet was also named the Under Armour/Owlsport.com Athlete of the Week for his four points that helped extend the Owls' win-streak to four.
Cayet led the team in points on the week after finding the back of the net in both of Temple's wins from his defensive position. The center back has not only proved to be a formidable force as part of one of the conference's top defenses, but also is a consistent threat for Temple's offense that has found its spark over the past few weeks. In Tuesday's win over Louisville, the junior captain found the back of the net just over two minutes into the second half when he buried a header off of an Esteban Suarez corner kick. He followed suit just four days later, netting almost an identical goal off a corner kick by Fernandes to secure the 2-1 win over UConn. The center back spearheads the back line that has allowed just 14 goals in as many games this season and is a key leader from the middle of the pitch for the Cherry and White.
Playing alongside his fellow Frenchman, Borger was a powerful offensive force for the Owls this week from his right-back position. A weapon for the Owls as a forward-pressing wing back, Borger chipped the ball onto the penalty spot from the right flank to the head of Fernades on Tuesday night to assist in the Owls' 2-1 victory on the road over Louisville. On Saturday, he proved his offensive abilities once again when he followed up on Suarez's free kick that bounced off the post and put the Owls ahead in the 26th minute. Borger also has been a brick-wall defender for the Cherry and White this season, shutting down multiple high caliber offenses to aid the impressive Temple defense.
Fernandes also contributed in both of Temple's wins this week, notably burying the game-winning goal in the 87th minute to hand the Owls the road-win over Louisville. The senior captain timed his run perfectly and got on the end of Borger's distribution, burying a header to the bottom left corner to give Temple the go-ahead goal. He carried this momentum into Saturday, dishing out the corner kick assist on Cayet's game-winning header goal that moved Temple's active win streak to four. Fernandes now leads the Temple offense with nine points from three goals and three assists in his 13 games played.
The Owls will be back in action on Friday, Nov. 1 when they head to Tulsa. Kickoff for the American Athletic Conference match-up is set for 8 pm (ET) in Tulsa, Okla.
