Men's Soccer Looks for Fifth-Straight Win at Tulsa Friday

10.31.19 | Men's Soccer

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple University men's soccer team (7-6-1, 3-1-1 AAC) continues their conference slate on the road when they take on Tulsa (4-8-1, 0-5-0) on Friday, Nov. 1. After going 5-1-1 during the month of October, the Owls are looking to extend their win-streak to five in an 8 pm (ET) AAC clash that has potential home playoff game ramifications for the Cherry and White.

Last Time Out
> The Owls are on a hot streak as they picked up their third American Athletic Conference victory of the season on Saturday night in a 2-1 win over UConn. The fourth-straight victory for Temple clinched the squad a spot in the AAC Championship field, but seeding remains up for grabs and will be decided after games this coming weekend and on Nov. 5.
> Two defensemen backed the scoring for the Owls in their first-ever win over the Huskies, as sophomore Mickael Borger put Temple on the board first and junior captain Pierre Cayet netted his second header goal in as many games to seal the 2-1 victory over UConn.
> The Cherry and White have proved to be extremely dangerous on set pieces this season and continued the trend against the Huskies. In the 26th minute, sophomore Esteban Suarez sent in a free kick from about 25 yards out that ricocheted off the left goalpost. A well-positioned Borger darted in to bury the deflection and score his second goal of the season to put the Owls up, 1-0. UConn responded eight minutes later when Jake Dengler capitalized off a Temple miscue in the box to net the equalizer.
> After almost 30 minute of back-and-forth play, the Owls' urgency paid off in the 61st minute when they earned three corner kicks in the span of one minute to test the UConn backline. On the third attempt, senior captain Lukas Fernandes sent an in-swinging corner to the far post, where Cayet positioned himself to bury a header goal and give Temple the lead. Cayet's goal was his second in as many games, as he scored nearly the exact same way in Temple's 2-1 win over Louisville on Tuesday.

Scouting the Owls
> Temple is coached by Brian Rowland in his second year leading the program. So far this season, Rowland has led the Owls to a 7-6-1 overall record through an extremely challenging nonconference slate that has featured three top-15 teams and notable wins over Memphis and Louisville. Temple has battled its way to a locked-in spot in the AAC Championship field with two games still left to play and an active win-streak of four.
> Fernandes spearheads the Temple offense with nine points from three goals and three assists so far this season. The senior captain has led an impressive Temple offense that struggled to put the pieces together in the beginning of the season but has netted nine goals in its last four games. Freshman Sean Karani has also greatly contributed to Temple's offensive spark, trailing Fernandes with eight points from three goals and two assists.
> The Temple defense has been impressive on both ends of the ball all season as all four members of the squad's starting back line have scored at least once this year. Borger has the third-most points on the team with five from two goals and an assist, Cayet and Suarez each have four points and Brandon Johnson has two to aid in the Owls' success all over the field.
> Simon Lefebvre has been phenomenal between the posts for the Owls, sitting second in the conference with a goals against average of 0.97 after allowing just 14 goals in as many games. The senior goalkeeper has saved 35 shots fired his way for a save percentage of .714 and has posted three shutouts this year.

RPI Watch
> The Owls have continued to climb up the NCAA Men's Soccer RPI listings, currently sitting at No. 34 after downing two teams in the top-25 in a 10 day span (No. 13 Louisville, No. 23 Memphis).
> Temple has faced four current top-10 RPI squads so far this season (No. 1 Georgetown, No. 3 St. John's, No. 4 UCF and No. 9 SMU), illustrating the challenging slate the Owls faced over the course of the season.

Conference Recognition
> Cayet, Borger and Fernandes were each honored by the American Athletic Conference this week for their game-changing contributions in Temple's undefeated week. Cayet earned his first honors of the season as he was named the AAC Defensive Player of the Week for spearheading the powerhouse Temple defense that allowed just six shots on goal on the week. The junior captain also netted a header goal in each of the Owls' victories to propel the squad to victory.
> Borger was named the AAC Rookie of the Week after demonstrating his offensive abilities from his right-back position. A weapon for the Owls as a forward-pressing wing back, Borger assisted the game winner in Temple's 2-1 win over Louisville and scored the Cherry and White's first goal against UConn.
> Fernandes was named to the Weekly Honor Roll after contributing to both of Temple's wins this week, notably burying the game-winner in the 87th minute to hand the Owls the road-win over Louisville. He carried this momentum into Saturday, dishing out the corner kick assist on Cayet's game-winning header goal against UConn that moved Temple's active win streak to four.

Scouting Tulsa
> Tulsa is coached by Tom McIntosh in his 25th year at the helm of the program. The winningest coach in program history, he's led the Golden Hurricane to a 4-8-1 record so far this season with a 0-5 tab in conference play. Every American match that Tulsa has lost has been by just one goal with the exception of a 5-1 loss at No. 12 SMU, and the Golden Hurricane has dropped three tight overtime matches this season. Notably, Tulsa's 2-1 loss to USF on Oct. 5 only counts towards conference standings and does not impact the team's overall record since the game was cut short due to weather and replayed unofficially for the final 21 minutes.
> Last time out, Tulsa dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to Memphis despite striking first in the 33rd minute. Memphis equalized just seven minutes after Rooks Hunter put the Golden Hurricane up one to even the score and force the conference-foes into overtime. The Tigers stuck the golden goal just 20 seconds into overtime to seal the Saturday night victory.
> Senior midfielder Harris Partain spearheads the Tulsa offense with 21 points from nine goals and three assists. The Frisco, Texas native has fired off a team-high 40 shots and notched a hat trick in the squad's 3-2 victory over Oral Roberts for his biggest offensive output of the season. Freshman Marcos Moreno has also had a big impact on the Tulsa offense during his rookie campaign, dishing out five assists and netting a goal for seven points on the season.
> Tulsa has seen three different players between the posts this season, but Bryson Reed and Brady Moody have spearheaded the action. Reed has started all seven games he's played, notching 24 saves and allowing 10 goals for a goal's against average of 1.36 during 664 minutes of action. Moody has played and started in five contests for 470 minutes in net for the Golden Hurricane, allowing nine goals for a goals against average of 1.72 and notching 19 saves.

The Series
> The Owls have accumulated a 2-2-1 record against the Golden Hurricane since the squads first met in 2014. Tulsa took the first two contests, but Temple won the last two meetings to tie up the series. Most recently, the Owls downed the Golden Hurricane 1-0 on senior night to clinch a spot in the 2018 AAC Championship field.
