Women’s Basketball Names Captains for 2019-20 Season

PHILADELPHIA – Temple University Women's Basketball head coach Tonya Cardoza has selected juniors Mia Davis and Nicolette Mayo as the captains for the 2019-20 season.

"I am excited to have Mia and Nic lead our team this year. They both work hard on and off the court and are exceptional role models for their teammates," said Cardoza, who is entering her 12th season at the helm of the program. "Mia was a no-brainer, she's been a leader on the floor since she first arrived on campus her freshman year. This year, she has really become more of a vocal leader and helps to push her teammates every day.

Nic has always brought a positive influence to our program, she motivates everyone to be their best and to work hard. She has such a great work ethic, so it was an easy choice to make her captain this year."

Davis earned a unanimous selection to the American Athletic Conference Preseason First Team and was named to the 2020 Cheryl Miller Award watch list for small forwards. The Baltimore, Md. native averaged 18.9 points per game and 9.2 rebounds per game to lead the Owls during the 2018-19 season. Davis completed her sophomore campaign with 28 double-digit games, including 13 games with more than 20 points. She scored a career-best 33 points while tying her career-high 17 rebounds during a conference win over Houston. Davis enters her third season on North Broad Street with a total of 12 career double-doubles.

On most days, you can catch Mayo putting up extra shots before or after practice with her twin sister and teammate, Emani. N. Mayo is always willing to go the extra mile to make herself and those around her better. She does not stop talking during practice (in a good way), constantly communicating and making sure everyone is on the same page. The Hephzibah, Ga. native has played in 13 games over her two years in the Cherry and White and collected her first collegiate points with a driving layup at home against East Carolina last season.

Temple opens their 2019-20 slate on Nov. 5th at McGonigle Hall against Fairfield at 6 p.m.
