Fencing to Open Team Competition at Penn

11.14.19 | Women's Fencing

PHILADELPHIA- The Temple fencing squad will open team competition Saturday in the City of Brotherly Love, facing several top programs at the Elite Meet hosted by Penn.

The Owls had a strong start to the season, opening the 2019-20 slate at the Temple Open two weeks ago. Senior Malia Hee earned a first-place finish in sabre to lead a Temple squad that saw six fencers place in the top 10 and 11 finish in the top 15 of their event.

Fellow senior Kennedy Lovelace earned a career-best fifth-place finish while junior Marielle Luke finished in seventh-place, 16 spots higher than her finish in 2018.

Five Owls made their debut in cherry and white at the Temple Open, with four finishing in the top 15. Naomi Ross led the newcomers with a ninth-place finish in epee, while Margherita Calderaro narrowly missed the top 10 with an 11th place finish.

Temple will fence five matches at the Elite Meet, competing against Harvard, NJIT, UNC, Air Force, and Cornell. Harvard closed the 2018-19 season with a fourth-place NCAA ranking, while Cornell, UNC, and Air Force all received votes in the final poll.

The Owls will have a bye in the first round of bouts, kicking off competition against Harvard at 10 a.m.
