Fencing to Compete at Garret Open

11.22.19 | Women's Fencing

PHILADELPHIA - Following a successful day of competition at the Elite Meet hosted by Penn last weekend, the Temple fencing team will close out individual collegiate competition at the Garret Open hosted by Penn State this weekend.

The Owls went 3-2 at Penn, narrowly falling to Cornell 14-13. The team fell to Harvard 16-11 to open the day before bouncing back with dominating performances against NJIT (17-10), UNC (22-5), and Air Force (18-9). Temple nearly defeated the Big Red, pulling the score from 8-12 to 13-13 before dropping the last two epee matches.

Sophomore Aryana Abtin led the team in wins, going 11-3, while newcomer Naomi Ross went 9-0. The epee squad went 4-1, only being defeated by Harvard.

Last season's Garret Open saw Malia Hee take home gold in sabre, winning 15 bouts in the pool rounds before besting four opponents in direct elimination. Kerry Plunkett was the next-best finisher, finishing seventh out of 59 athletes.

Pool play for both foil and epee will kick off at 8 a.m., while pool play for sabre is set to begin at 10:30 a.m.
