Women's Basketball Wins Big in Season Opener

PHILADELPHIA — The Temple women's basketball team grabbed a 77-59 season opening win over visiting Fairfield on Tuesday night at McGonigle Hall. The Owls had four players in double figures in scoring to start the 2019-20 campaign, 1-0.
Keys to the Game
> Temple shot 43.5% from the field, including draining 10 threes on the night.
> The Owls held Fairfield to 34.5% shooting, torching 15 turnovers.
> After being out-rebounded 25-17 in the first half, the Owls cleaned up on the boards in the final two quarters to finish with a 40-38 edge on the glass.
> Both teams shot over 50% in the first frame, which ended with a slim Fairfield advantage.
> Temple took over the lead in the second quarter and never looked back, leading by as many as 23 before finishing out the victory.
Individual Highlights
> Redshirt sophomore Ashley Jones led Temple with 21 points and seven assists in her first game as an Owl.
> Sophomore Marissa Mackins drained a career-best six threes to finish with 20 points on the night.
> Junior Mia Davis notched her 13th career double-double, finishing with 18 points and 11 boards.
> Senior Shannen Atkinson tallied 11 points and six boards, while sophomore Alexa Williamson chipped in with seven points, six boards, and a pair of blocked shots.
First Quarter
> Both teams came out of the gates with a hot hand, draining threes from the start.
> Fairfield held the edge most of the way, but Temple kept pace, with seven ties in the first 10 minutes.
> The Stags got the final bucket of the frame however, leading 20-18 after one.
Second Quarter
> Temple opened the second quarter on a 7-0 run to take a 25-20 lead on a Mackins triple.
> Fairfield countered with a 7-2 surge to knot the score at 27-27 midway through play.
> Temple surged once more before the half, scoring five unanswered to take a 32-27
Third Quarter
> The Owls quickly extended their lead in the opening minutes of the third, as Mackins hit a pair of threes as part of a 7-0 opening run.
> With Temple up 40-27, Fairfield got the lead below 10 just once, after a free throw at 5:18 make it 43-34.
> Temple rolled the rest of the quarter, as Jones hit three from long range, giving the Owls a 61-45 lead after three.
Fourth Quarter
> Mackins hit two more threes and Davis added five fourth quarter points, as Temple outscored the Stags 16-14 to seal the win.
