Women’s Basketball Hosts Florida Gulf Coast Sunday

PHILADELPHIA — The Temple women's basketball team hosts Florida Gulf Coast on Sunday, Dec. 22 at 12 p.m. in McGonigle Hall.
GAME INFORMATION
> Fans can save $5 at the box office if they bring a new, unwrapped toy to the game or they can receive $1 off their ticket if they wear an ugly sweater.
THE OWLS
> Temple enters Sunday's game with a record of 6-5. The Owls are coming off a 74-69 win over Villanova on Dec. 10.
> Mia Davis leads the Cherry and White with 19.3 points per game and 9.8 rebounds per game. The junior forward totals seven double-doubles this season, tying for third-most in the country. Davis also ranks sixth in the nation in free throws made with 58.
> Ashley Jones has been a great addition to the Temple offense as the redshirt-sophomore adds 17.3 points and 4.0 assists per game. Jones has also been a force on the boards, averaging 5.6 rebounds per contest.
> Sophomore Marissa Mackins leads the Owls with 26 three-pointers on the year as she averages 11.3 points per game. Mackins registered a monster game against No. 6 South Carolina as the Durham, N.C. native poured in a career-high 26 points.
> Leading Temple in the assist column with 5.1 per game is freshman Asonah Alexander. The rookie earned Big 5 Player of the Week and American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Week after finishing just shy of a triple-double with 19 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists against Villanova. Alexander averages 7.5 points and 6.0 rebounds for the Cherry and White.
> Lena Niang has recently stepped out to help the Owls with her back-to-back double-digit performances. Niang recorded her first career double-double against No. 6 South Carolina with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
LAST TIME OUT: Temple 74, Villanova 69
> After a tight first quarter, Temple took over in the second and third and led by nearly 18 points.
> Villanova rallied to cut the deficit to just one point late in the fourth quarter, but Temple got timely baskets and was perfect from the line in the final frame to seal the win.
> Temple out-shot the Wildcats, 41.7% to 37.7%, including going 9-17 from three point range (52.9%).
> The Owls also held a huge lead on the glass, out-rebounding Villanova, 47-34.
> Alexander tallied her second career double-double, with a stacked stat line of 19 points, 11 rebounds, and seven assists.
> Davis also notched a double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds.
> Mackins had 15 points with seven assists, while Niang also finished in double figures in scoring, adding 14 points and seven boards.
> Rounding out the box score, sophomore Alexa Williamson had eight points while senior Shannen Atkinson had six rebounds.
SCOUTING FLORIDA GULF COAST
> Head coach Karl Smesko is in his 21st season of coaching and his 18th at the helm of the Eagles program. Smesko is the third winningest active Division I head coach with his 81.5 win percentage. On Dec. 3, Smesko was tabbed Division I Coach of the Week by WHoopDirt.com.
> The Eagles are led by Keri Jewett-Giles with her 16.5 points per game. Jewett-Giles also leads the team in assists (46) and steals (31).
> Tytionia Adderly is the rebounding force for FGCU, pulling down 9.8 boards per game. Adderly became the Eagles' all-time leading rebounder on Nov. 20 with her six rebounds in the win over Johnson & Wales to break the previous 887 mark set five years prior. The senior forward also falls right behind Jewett-Giles in the assist column with 45 on the year.
> Davion Wingate adds 15.7 points per game for FGCU. She leads the team in field goal percentage (58.6%) and three-point shooting percentage (46.4%).
> Ashli O'Neal, a graduate transfer from Indiana State, has been named the ASUN Newcomer of the Week three times so far this season. O'Neal averages 8.4 points per contest and is shooting a team-best 82.9% from the free throw line.

> The Eagles dropped a close contest to LSU on Dec. 19 at home as 17-3 run by LSU over the final three and a half minutes guided them to victory.
> Jewett-Giles poured in a career-high 35 points, finishing 12-for-20 from the field and 5-for-7 from three-point range. She added five assists and two steals to her stat line.
> Adderly led the Eagles on the boards with a team-high 10 rebounds, while tallying four assists and three steals.
