Men's Basketball Hosts SMU for White Out and 90s Night on Wednesday

PHILADELPHIA - Wear your white and think 90s for this week's Temple men's basketball home game against SMU at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 13 (ESPN3 / 1210 AM WPHT). The Owls (17-7, 7-4) split games last week with a win vs. UConn and a loss at Tulsa, while the Mustangs (12-11, 4-7) have lost four straight.

Promotions
> It's the annual "White Out" game as well as 90s Night, and the first 6,000 fans will receive a free 90s themed white t-shirt courtesy of Coca-Cola. 
> At halftime is the annual Student-Athlete Recognition, with all Temple student-athletes who earned a GPA of 3.0 or higher last semester being recognized.
> It's also Meet your Match Night and Fraternity and Sorority Night. 

Scouting Temple
> Last week's games saw a major shift for the Owls, who had one of their best offensive performances of the season in an 81-63 defeat of UConn, followed three days later by their worst performance in a 76-58 loss at Tulsa.
> Five players reached double figures in scoring in the UConn win, with Temple shooting a season-best 62 percent in the first half and scoring a season-high 46 first-half points. Senior Shizz Alston, Jr. led the way overall with 18 points.
> In his third career start, sophomore Justyn Hamilton scored 11 first-half points on his way to a career-high 13 points in the UConn win, hitting 6-of-7 field goals.
> In the loss to Tulsa on Feb. 9, Temple shot a season-low 30.6 percent overall and scored a season-low 27 second-half points with a season-low 21.7 percent shooting in that period (5-for-23). 
> In a 75-67 win at Tulane on Feb. 2, Alston scored 29 points including 14-of-15 free throws. It was the most free throws by an Owl in a single game since Khalif Wyatt made 15 vs. Duquesne on Feb. 14, 2013.
> Alston is shooting 91.6 percent (98-for-107) from the free throw line this season to lead all players in the AAC and rank fifth among all players in NCAA Division I.
> Alston and junior Quinton Rose average 18.1 and 16.6 points per game, respectively, to lead the team and rank third and eighth in the American Athletic Conference. Alston has scored 20 or more points nine times this season and has earned two co-AAC Player of the Week awards.
> Sophomore Nate Pierre-Louis has scored in double figures in 18 games this season and ranks third on the team with 13.8 points per game.
> Temple ranks 11th in the nation with 9.0 steals per game. The Owls have posted double-digit steals in 11 games.

Scouting SMU
> Two years removed from a 30-5 season, SMU is struggling at 12-11 overall and the Mustangs have lost four straight as well as six of their last seven games.
> The first of the four losses was a two-point defeat at Wichita State, while the third was a one-point loss to USF.
> Four players average in double figures in scoring for SMU, led by Jahmal McMurray with 17.5 points per game.
> Jimmy Whitt, Jr. averages a team-best 4.5 assists per game to go with 12.9 ppg and 6.4 rebounds per game.
> Three-pointers are a strength for the Mustangs, who rank second in the AAC with 8.7 three-point field goals made per game. McMurray has made 74 of those and ranks second in the AAC with 3.2 three-point field goals made per game.

Series History vs. SMU
> Temple and SMU are meeting for the 12th time with SMU holding a slim, 6-5 edge in the all-time series.
> The Owls won the only meeting last season, edging the Mustangs 66-64 in Dallas on Jan. 10.
> The Mustangs had swept Temple the year prior, winning 79-65 in Dallas on Jan. 4 and defeating the Owls 66-50 in Philadelphia on Feb. 9.
> The Owls were the first team to defeat SMU in 2015-16 after an 18-0 start for the #8 Mustangs. Temple pulled off the upset at home on Jan. 24, winning 89-80. It was the only meeting between the two teams that season.
> Prior to meeting as AAC opponents in 2013-14, the most recent meeting was in 1955-56 when the Owls beat the Mustangs 90-81 in the NCAA Final Four third-place game.
> The first meeting between the teams was in 1937-38, with Temple earning a 53-41 win at the Philadelphia Arena.
> Fran Dunphy faced SMU three times while at Penn, winning in 1989-90 and 1990-91 and losing once in 1995-96.
