Gottlieb and White Shine on Day 2 of AAC Indoor Championships

2.23.19 | Women's Track and Field

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Temple University track and field team wrapped up day two of the American Athletic Conference Championships in Birmingham, Ala., signaling the conclusion of the 2018-19 indoor season. Sophomore Helene Gottlieb had a stellar day for the Owls, earning All-Conference honors in both the 800m and the mile to bring a pair of medals back to North Broad. Marissa White also had a superb weekend, finishing fourth overall in the 400m dash at her first conference meet in Cherry and White. As a team, the Owls finished 10th at the indoor championships with 31.5 points.

Meet Highlights
> Aisha Brown kicked off day two of the AAC Indoor Championships in the high jump. The sophomore entered the event at 1.69m, soaring over the bar to clear the height on her third attempt. She also conquered her second height of 1.73m on her third attempt, remaining focused to advance. Brown nearly cleared her third height, but came up just short to tie for fifth overall and earn the Owls four points in the high jump.
> Gottlieb shined in her fourth event on the track at the championship meet, finishing third overall in the mile to earn her rightful spot on the podium. In an extremely competitive field in the event finals for the mile, the sophomore fought her way to the front of the pack and never looked back. Gottlieb blazed through the final 400m to finish in 4:51.48, earning her All-Conference honors for the first time in her track and field career at Temple and picking up six points for the Owls.
> White was nothing short of remarkable in the finals of the 400m dash. Entering the meet seeded ninth in the event, the freshman put on a solid showing yesterday to place eighth and advance into Saturday. In the finals, she bolted through the second 200m of the race, passing two people on the straightaway to finish second in the slower of the two heats. White ran a massive PR of 55.20, more than four tenths of a second faster than her previous best, passing two runners in the faster heat for fourth overall. The freshman racked up five points for the Owls in the event that exemplified an outstanding rookie indoor season.
> Gottlieb hit the track hungry to make her mark in the 800m after a standout performance in the mile. The sophomore crushed her previous indoor personal best by over two seconds, clocking a speedy 2:08.39 to earn silver in the event. Gottlieb ran a determined race, accelerating through the very end for a thrilling finish.
> Kira Von Ehren was resilient in the 3000m to earn a point for Temple in the lone distance event for the day. The junior graduate student finished the race in 9:50.33, placing eighth overall in the 49-person field of finishers.

From the Coach
> "After completing the second day of the AAC Championships, it's safe to say there were moments of joy and excitement, but also some moments of real letdown," said head coach Elvis Forde. "Helene had such an incredible weekend in regards to what she has accomplished. Third in the mile, second in the 800...it's just drive and determination. It could've been easy for her to say 'I'm tired' and give up, but she fought all the way and it showed in the results. Aisha similarly could have given up due to the issues she starting having with her hamstring at the beginning of the trip, but instead she was very valiant in her efforts considering the circumstances.
> Another highlight of the weekend was Marissa. She ended up fourth in the 400m, and for a freshman to run that fast this early in her career shows that we have a lot to look forward to over the next couple of years. She came back and gave the 4x4 team a really good start and put us in the mix so we could at least score a point in the end.
> On the other hand, I was a pretty disappointed in the way some of our student-athletes performed. We were counting on some of our distance runners to put some points on the board, and that did not play out. We also expected more from many of our jumpers. We have to walk away reflecting on those who had a tremendous weekend and learn from the rest. Time to go back to the drawing board for a lot of things, and look towards the outdoor season."

Up Next
> As the 2018-19 indoor track and field season comes to a close, the Owls now look forward to the upcoming outdoor season. Temple will hit the outdoor track for the first time in 2019 when they head to Charlotte, N.C. for the two-day Charlotte 49ers Invitational from March 15-16.
