Track and Field Overcomes Windy Conditions at Penn Challenge
3.23.19 | Women's Track and Field
PHILADELPHIA – The Temple University track and field team wrapped up another weekend of competition on a chilly day in Philadelphia at the Penn Challenge. The squad battled windy conditions on the track and in the field at Franklin Field, walking away with second place finishes from Aisha Brown in the high jump and Kayla Nesbitt-McEwen in the triple.
Meet Highlights
> Madison Beecher had a solid showing in the 200m, despite having to fight the fierce winds on the back stretch. The junior clocked a time of 25.58 to finish third overall in the 33 person field. Sophomore Mallorie Smith also ran well, finishing seventh with a time of 26.05.
> The sprinting duo also placed well in the 400m dash, persevering through a tough race to place in the top-five. Beecher finished third in the quarter-mile with a time of 59.23, and Smith trailed her by just .03 of a second to finish fourth overall (59.26).
> Millie Howard was back in action for the first time since the AAC Indoor Championships exactly one month ago. The junior put on a good first outdoor performance of the year in the 800m, finishing third overall with a time of 2:12.48.
> Brown remains in the top pack of each high jump flight she competes in, finishing second overall with a mark of 1.65m. Fellow sophomore Nesbitt-McEwen also performed well, clearing 1.60m on her first attempt to finish sixth in the field.
> With one of the most impressive performances on the day, Julianne Foering crushed it in the javelin for her second competition of the season. The sophomore advanced to finals for the second straight week, finishing seventh in the field with a mark of 40.04m.
> Nesbitt-McEwen shined in the triple jump once again, placing second with a jump of 11.73m. Sophomore Candus Burks also had a good day in the pit, placing fifth with a mark of 11.41m. Burks also had a solid day in the long jump, qualifying for finals to earn seventh with a mark of 5.46m.
From the Coach
> "It was a very difficult day for a track meet today over at Franklin Field," said head coach Elvis Forde. "The weather was a factor in everything that was done today, but the good news is it was the same for everyone that was competing. Because of this, there was nothing outstanding today regarding personal bests or times, but the effort was really there from all of our student-athletes.
> "Regarding our performances, Julianne Foering really stood out in the javelin today. She had a throw of over 40 meters, which is a very good mark for this time of year. This time last year she was so far off of that, and it is good to see her come out and put up a mark like that.
> "It was another meet under our belt under difficult conditions, but such is the outdoor season. If we put the same effort into a nice day, I'm very confident we will see some great performances from our team. Now, we look forward to some great marks during our split weekend coming up at Raleigh and Ole Miss."
Up Next
> The Owls prepare for a split weekend, as the distance crew will head to Raleigh, N.C. to compete at the Raleigh Relays, and the sprint and jump squads travel to Oxford, Miss. for the Ole Miss Classic.
