3.27.19 | Women's Track and Field

PHILADELPHIA – After starting the outdoor season strong with a pair of meets under its belt, the Temple University track and field team prepares to carry its momentum into this weekend for split meets down south. Competition will begin Friday, March 29 as the distance crew returns to North Carolina for the second time this season to race at the Raleigh Relays, hosted by NC State. Sprints, jumps and throws will be in action on Saturday, as they travel to Oxford, Miss. to compete at the Ole Miss Classic with warmer weather on their minds.

About the Raleigh Relays
> The Raleigh Relays are set to begin Friday morning at 9 am on the track with the first of three sections of the women's 5000m. Six Owls will make the trip down to Raleigh looking to best their marks from the season thus far.
> Lucy Jones will hit the track first for the Owls at 4:38 pm in the 3000m steeplechase. The sophomore will race her signature event for the second time this season, as she looks to break her own school record of 10:39.36 from 2018.
> At 6:15 pm, junior Millie Howard and sophomore Helene Gottlieb are set to race the 1500m. Howard will look to improve upon her own school record time of 4:18.73, and Gottlieb will look to carry her momentum from her podium-finish in the mile at the indoor championships.
> Kira Von Ehren will race her first 5000m of the season at 7:36 pm. Following, senior Katie Leisher and sophomore Michelle Joyce will compete under the lights in a late-night 10,000m set to begin at 10:43 pm.
> The meet will be streamed live as an ACC Network Extra, with the broadcast beginning at 7 pm Friday evening.

About the Ole Miss Classic
> Field events for the Ole Miss Classic will kick off on Saturday morning at 9 am, and running events will begin early afternoon at 1 pm with the 3000m steeplechase. Nine Owls from the sprint, jump and throw squads will head to Oxford compete for the third time this outdoor season.
> Julianne Foering will get the day started for the Cherry and White in the javelin, set to begin at 11 am. Following, fellow sophomore Candus Burks will compete in the long jump at 11:30 am.
> At 1:30 pm, sophomores Aisha Brown and Kayla Nesbitt-McEwen will compete in the high jump. Then, fellow sophomore McKenzie Gelvin will get the Owls started on the track at 1:40 pm, running her first 1500m of the season.
> At 2:10 pm, sophomore Sydney Williams will compete in the 100m hurdles for the third time this season. Following, sophomore Mallorie Smith and senior Ashton Dunkley will run the 400m at 2:30 pm. Burks will compete in her first running event of the season when she races the 100m dash at 2:45 pm.
> Burks and Nesbitt-McEwen will be back in action at 3 pm in the triple jump. Then, Williams will return for the long hurdles with Brown at 3:20 pm. Nesbitt-McEwen and sophomore Madison Beecher will close out individual events on the day in the 200m at 3:40.
> To wrap up the day, Brown, Gelvin, Dunkley and Beecher will race the 4x400m relay at 4:50 pm.

Last Time Out
> Last weekend, the Owls wrapped up another day of competition on a chilly day in Philadelphia at the Penn Challenge, overcoming the windy conditions at Franklin Field.
> Beecher had a solid showing in the 200m, despite having to fight fierce winds on the back stretch. The junior clocked a time of 25.58 to finish third overall in the 33 person field. Smith also ran well, finishing seventh with a time of 26.05.
> The sprint duo also placed well in the 400m dash, persevering through a tough race to place in the top-five. Beecher finished third in the quarter-mile with a time of 59.23, and Smith trailed her by just .03 of a second to finish fourth overall (59.26).
> Howard was back in action for the first time since the AAC Indoor Championships, running a solid first race of the year to finish third in the 800m with a time of 2:12.48.
> Brown continues to be in the top pack of each high jump flight she competes in, finishing second overall with a mark of 1.65m. Nesbitt-McEwen also performed well in the event, clearing 1.60m on her first attempt to finish sixth in the field.
> With one of the most impressive performances on the day, Foering crushed the javelin throw for her second competition of the season. The sophomore advanced to finals for the second straight week, finishing seventh in the field with a solid early season mark of 40.04m.
> Nesbitt-McEwen shined in the triple jump once again, placing second with a jump of 11.73m. Burks also had a good day in the pit, placing fifth with a mark of 11.41m.

On the Lookout
> White remains the second fastest 400m runner in the conference with her gold-winning mark of 54.62 from the Charlotte 49er Classic. Her time is also good for the 13th-fastest in the NCAA East Region, and is the fastest run by a Temple student-athlete since 2015.
> Gottlieb still holds her rightful title as the fastest in the American after clocking a time of 2:08.51 in the 800m at the Charlotte 49er Classic. The sophomore also remains in the top-10 in the NCAA East Region for the second straight week. Howard also ranks among the best in the conference in the 800m, currently sitting fourth after running a time of 2:12.48 through intense winds at the Penn Challenge.
> Jones continues to be the frontrunner of the AAC in the steeplechase after running the 3K in 10:45.89 two weeks ago at the Charlotte 49er Classic. Chasing down her own school record in the event, the sophomore also sits third in the NCAA East Region.
> Just .75 of an inch behind the conference leaders, Brown's jump of 1.73m in the high jump at the Charlotte 49er Classic is still good for the third best in the American. The sophomore defended her title at the season-opener two weeks ago in the event and was runner-up last weekend at the Penn Challenge.
