Volleyball's Boyd and Salvador Headed to USA Tryouts
2.27.19 | Women's Volleyball
PHILADELPHIA -- Temple Volleyball will once again be represented at the USA Volleyball National Team Tryout. Sophomore Averi Salvador and Peyton Boyd will attend the event, which runs March 1-3 the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
"There are some elite coaches at the tryout, scouting and evaluating these players, and to have Temple in front of them is huge," noted Head Coach Bakeer Ganesharatnam. "It puts us on the volleyball map. For the individual players, it's a huge opportunity to be on this platform, surrounded by elite players, to see where they stack up against them. It's motivating to see players at this high level."
Salvador is a defensive specialist who saw her role increase tremendously this fall, after having participated in the tryout last year. She played in 25 matches for the Owls in 2018, racking up 244 total digs for an average of 2.77 per set. Salvador ranked fourth on the team in aces (10), and hit double figures in digs in 11 difference matches during the year, including hitting her season high of 17 on four occasions.
"I think I have a different mindset going in this time," explained Salvador. "I was intimidated at first, but this time I'm going in more confident. I know what to expect, so I'll have an advantage. Last year I had Izzy and Kyra here to help me out, and hopefully I'll do the same for Peyton this year."
Boyd, who plays opposite, saw action in 19 matches for the Owls in 2018, shining in her rookie campaign. She averaged 1.55 kills per set, with 93 total, while racking up 31 blocks. Boyd had six matches with eight or more kills, while notching a season-best 14 kills against Tulsa and five blocks against High Point.
"I'm a little scared, but it's a great opportunity. I'm excited to experience playing with different types of players and different coaching," said Boyd.
This is the third year in a row that Temple has sent athletes to the tryout. Past participants include Izzy Rapacz, currently a professional volleyball player for Enea Energetyk Poznan in the top Polish professional league, and Kyra Coundourides, currently an assistant coach at Baldwin Wallace University.
In total, 218 athletes will be vying for spots into the elite high performance pipeline. The tryout will evaluate athletes from 87 colleges from across the country for spots on the U.S. Women's National Team and the U.S. Collegiate National Team program. The breakdown for the tryout includes 56 outside hitters, 47 liberos, 43 setters, 41 middles and 31 opposites.
