Seventh-Ranked Fencing Goes for Title No. 24 in a Row at NIWFA Championships

PHILADELPHIA - With its regular season completed, seventh-ranked Temple fencing now looks to the postseason. First up, the Owls (25-8) will go for their 24th straight National Intercollegiate Women's Fencing Association (NIWFA) team title at the conference's 91st annual championship meet on Saturday, March 2. Madison, N.J. is the site of the annual meet, held this year on the campus of Drew University.
Meet History
> Temple head coach Dr. Nikki Franke led the Owls to a 23rd consecutive team title at last year's NIWFA Championships, the 90th annual.
> The Owls also won a trophy in foil last year, and now-graduated Safa Ibrahim took an individual title in epee.
> Senior Auset Muhammad tied for third in foil last year for a second year in a row, and junior Malia Hee was third in sabre. Senior Fiona Fong was just behind Ibrahim, taking third in epee after a fourth-place finish the year before.
> In the team event, Temple beat out NYU and Stevens for its team title last season. Stevens took the team win in epee, while Johns Hopkins won in sabre.Â
Scouting Temple
> The Owls finished the dual meet season at 25-8, most recently going 4-1 at their own Temple Invitational including wins over #9 Penn and #10 Princeton.
> Leading Temple overall this season is junior sabre Kerry Plunkett with a record of 53-14. Close behind her is junior Malia Hee with a record of 48-18.
> In epee, senior Ally Micek leads the Owls at 45-34 overall.
> Freshman Aryana Abtin has the best foil record for Temple at 45-30.
Next Up
> One week after the NIWFA Championships, the Owls will head to the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional at Lafayette, and will be represented by the maximum 12 participants.
