2.8.19 | Women's Track and Field
BOSTON – The Temple University track and field team went out with a bang for its final meet of the regular indoor season on Friday at the Valentine Invitational. The Owls shined in Boston, Mass. when they hit the track one last time before the American Athletic Conference Championships in two weeks. The day was highlighted by a new school record from Millie Howard and multiple personal records against high-caliber competition.
Top Performances
> Sydney Williams got the day started for the Owls in the 60m hurdles. A consistent hurdler for the Owls, the sophomore qualified for finals after running the straight in 9.14. In the finals, Williams placed seventh overall with a time of 8.93, only six hundredths of a second off of her season-best.
> For the fifth time this season, Marissa White reset her best 400m time in a Cherry and White uniform. This time, she not only reset her Temple best, but her all-time personal record as well. Running her fastest 400m ever in 55.64, White achieved this milestone and placed 14th in the 172-person field. Mallorie Smith and Madison Beecher also ran their fastest 400's of the season, finishing in 57.44 and 57.80, respectively.
> Temple crushed it again in the 200m with three Owls running their fastest times of the season. White showed up again in the 200m, setting her second personal record of the day and running the fastest time for Temple this season in 25.05. Trailing her teammate by just seven hundredths of a second was Madison Beecher, who ran her fastest lap of the year in 25.12. Next for the Owls came Williams, who dropped nearly half a second off of her season-best to finish the race in 25.57.
> The Owls were nothing short of spectacular in the 1000m run. Millie Howard came to fight in the event, shattering her own previous school record by over five seconds to reset the mark to 2:46.74 and place eighth overall. Ashton Dunkley also showed up in the 1000, shaving over seven seconds off of her time to post an impressive 2:55.12. McKenzie Gelvin also improved greatly, resetting her personal best to 2:56.64.
> Temple stepped up in the mile, putting multiple fast times in the books for the day. Leading the Owls was Helene Gottlieb, who shattered her previous personal record by over six seconds with a time of 4:48.90. Next for Temple was Kira Von Ehren, who shaved almost two seconds off her previous best time after finishing the race in 4:55.09.
> In the field, Jamie Drayton competed for the first time in Cherry and White and she did not disappoint. The freshman won her flight and finished tenth overall in the long jump after hitting the mark of 5.45m, the best jump of an Owl this season.
> The Owls put together their fastest race of the year in the 4x400m relay. Almost three seconds faster than the previous season-best time, the squad of White (56.29), Aisha Brown (56.71), Smith (55.99) and Dunkley (58.33) finished the race in 3:47.33, earning them eighth in a field of 53.
> To wrap up a stellar day of competition, the Owls saw two more personal bests in the 3000m run. Lucy Jones set a massive PR, dropping almost nine seconds and running the 3K in 9:53.67. Michelle Joyce also reset her fastest time, finishing the 3000m in 9:55.12.
From the Coach
> "It was a great day all around," said head coach Elvis Forde. "For starters, we had some great PR's from Michelle and Lucy in the 3000m that were critical to putting them into the fast heat at the conference meet. The 1000m was special, because we saw Millie knock down her school record by about six seconds, and she was very impressive in her efforts. Ashton and McKenzie had personal records as well and showed great improvements.
> In the mile, we had Kira set a new best mark as well as Helene. We look forward to watching them both do something special at the conference meet in two weeks. On the jumps side, we welcomed Jamie Drayton to her first collegiate meet and for her first meet, it was a good step in the right direction. On the sprint side, Marissa continues to shine. The mark she ran says a lot, because it is her fastest time ever—indoors or outdoors—which speaks volumes about what she is able to do.
> We also had some PR's in the 400 for Mallorie and Madison, and those two had very good races. We came back again in the 200m and saw another PR from Marissa and another great race from Madison. All in all, Coach Snyder is doing a really good job with our middle distance and distance kids getting them ready for conferences. Generally across the board, there were great improvements everywhere which is what we need going into the conference meet. Last but not least, our 4x4 relay team had a season's best performance. Overall, a good weekend and a good confidence booster heading into the conference championships."
