Brown and Gottlieb Add Two More First Place Finishes to Conclude 49er Classic

3.16.19 | Women's Track and Field

CHARLOTTE – The Temple University track and field squad completed day two of the Charlotte 49er Classic on Saturday, tabbing two more first place finishes and multiple personal best times to illustrate a solid opening weekend to the outdoor season. Sophomores Aisha Brown and Helene Gottlieb snagged individual victories on the day, with Brown winning the high jump and Gottlieb earning the 800m title.

Meet Highlights
> Julianne Foering got day two started for the Owls with her 2019 debut in the javelin. The sophomore put on a solid first performance of the season, earning a mark of 39.12m (128-4) to finish eighth among 35 competitors.
> The Temple jumpers had an outstanding day in the field, competing on day two in the triple jump and the high jump. Sophomore Kayla Nesbitt-McEwen destroyed her previous personal record in the triple jump, earning a mark of 12.23m (40-1.5) to reset her best distance and finish third overall in the 38-person field.
> Aisha Brown was phenomenal in the invitational section of the high jump, walking away as the only jumper to clear 1.73m on the day. The sophomore came hungry to defend her title from 2018 and emerged victorious, closing at the mark of 1.73m on her first attempt to take the high jump title.
> After getting on the podium in both the mile and the 800m at the AAC Indoor Championships a few weeks ago, Helene Gottlieb hit the outdoor track for the first time this season with the same fight in her. The sophomore dominated the field of 89 runners, crossing the finish line in 2:08.51 to place first overall. Fellow sophomore McKenzie Gelvin also competed well in the event, finishing 10th with a time of 2:15.65.
> Coming off of a huge win in the 400m yesterday, Marissa White continued her momentum and ran a stellar 200m dash. The standout freshman showed out in her first-ever outdoor 200m with the Owls, running a massive PR of over half a second to place third with a time of 24.49. Junior Madison Beecher also had a solid showing in her first short sprint of the season, finishing the race in 25.21.

From the Coach
> "We got started on day two here in North Carolina with Candus and Kayla in the triple jump and Julie in the javelin," said head coach Elvis Forde. "Kayla had a really good performance this morning, setting a new PR to start the day. If she continues to do what we know she is capable of, she will be a really great competitor in the conference. Julie has been training for the whole year and finally got to throw today, which brought a lot of excitement. She had a good start, and we hope she can continue to work hard and get better.
> "Helene had a great 800m run, and she's going to be tough to beat. We know she is going to have a great outdoor season based on her performances indoors, and she put up a very good mark for her first race of the year. She is a very fierce competitor.
> "I can't say enough about Marissa. She has started the outdoor season so well, setting a new personal best in both of her events despite some adversity. She just wants to be good and that's the bottom line, and she will continue to excel. Madison had a good performance in the 200m as well to start off the season, so we look forward to continuing to see her improve.
> "There's still a lot of season left, but the nice thing about this weekend was we felt like our team really competed. I look forward to watching our kids continue to put in the work to get better heading into the conference meet at the end of the season."

Up Next
> The Owls will be back in action on Saturday, March 23 when they head to University City to compete locally at the Penn Challenge.
