Anderson, Castrence and Servidio Qualify for NCAA Regionals
3.25.19 | Women's Gymnastics
PHILADELPHIA—For the third straight season, the Temple women's gymnastics team will be represented at NCAA Regionals. Senior India Anderson earned a specialist spot on floor, sophomore Monica Servidio was selected for beam and freshman Ariana Castrence will compete on vault. This ties the most individual qualifiers that Temple has ever produced. The Owls will compete at the Athens Regional, hosted by the University of Georgia, on April 5.
Anderson is the first NCAA Regional individual qualifier on floor in Temple history. The Allendale, S.C. native has been stellar in her senior season, competing on floor for the Owls in all 13 of the team's competitions. Anderson's consistent excellence in her signature event has earned her three ECAC Specialist of the Week awards, four event titles and ECAC Specialist of the Year. She has posted nine scores of 9.85 or above this season. Anderson holds a career-best of 9.9, which she has earned twice this year.
Servidio has also made Temple history, as she is the program's first invididual qualifier on beam. The sophomore's consistency and elite execution have been on display all season for the Owls. She was named ECAC Gymnast of the Year and owns three event titles on beam, including the ECAC title. Servidio has earned seven scores of 9.8 or above on the event this season, hitting her career-best mark of 9.9 twice. She was instrumental in helping Temple shatter the program's beam record at the ECAC Championships on Saturday en route to the conference title.
Castrence has been a force on vault for Temple, anchoring the squad as a freshman. She earned ECAC Rookie of the Year for her impressive first year in the Cherry and White. Castrence has had great success in her freshman campaign on vault, earning three event titles and setting a career-best mark of 9.875 with her Yurchenko 1 ½.
"I'm really proud that we are sending three individuals to regionals," said head coach Josh Nilson. "It's a great step, especially after winning ECACs for the first time in program history. Starting with India, she is the best person to represent our team on floor. She has a real shot to shine and make a name for us on floor. Next, Monica is the best person to represent us on beam. She has been in a position over and over where she needed to count for the team and she did. I'm really proud of her. Ariana was Rookie of the Year in the ECAC and is very deserving of this spot. She is the best vaulter on the team and the right person to go to regionals for us. I'm so proud of all of them for their success and qualifying for regionals as individuals."
