Women's Basketball Ends 2018-19 Campaign in American First Round

UNCASVILLE, Conn. — The Temple women's basketball team was outscored 28-12 in the fourth quarter, as #11 Memphis nipped the #6 Owls, 59-58, in the first round of the 2019 American Athletic Conference Tournament. Temple ends its season at 11-19, while the Tigers advance to play #3 Cincinnati in tomorrow's quarterfinal.
Keys to the Game
> Temple saw a 19-point fourth quarter lead slip away, as Memphis shot 52.6% from the field and a massive 71.4% (5-7) from three in the final frame.
> The Owls shot 38.5% from the field in the fourth, but was done in by seven turnovers in the final eight minutes, as Memphis' trap proved to be trouble for Temple.
> Temple jumped out to a 17-5 lead and led 28-17 at halftime.
> The Owls' extended the lead to 46-31 after three, before Memphis' fourth quarter magic took over.
Individual Highlights
> Junior Shantay Taylor had a career night, recording her third career double-double, racking up 16 points and 14 rebounds.
> Sophomore Mia Davis finished with 14 points and seven boards, while graduate Alliya Butts notched 10 points and six assists.
> Senior Lena Niang added eight points and freshman Marissa Mackins had seven .

> Temple's stout defense continued into the second quarter, as the Owls did not allow another Memphis field goal until well over halfway into the frame.
> Meanwhile, the Owls' offense rolled, building a 26-7 advantage on a Davis and one.
> Temple got in to foul trouble shortly after however, allowing Memphis a 10-2 run to close the frame, but the Owls still led 28-17.
Third Quarter
> Temple got scores from Davis and Mackins to open the third, before Memphis used a solid trap and sharp shooting to rattle off a 9-2 run.
> After a Memphis three closed the gap to 38-31, Temple created some distance by scoring eight straight to end the frame with a 46-31 advantage.

> Temple pushed its lead to 50-31 before Memphis began its comeback.
> The Tigers rattled off a 28-7 run to take their first lead of the game on a three from Jamirah Shutes with just over a minute to play.
> After the Owls came up empty on their next offensive possession, Butts got a steal to cut the score to 59-58 with under 20 seconds to play.
> Temple fouled and Memphis missed its free throws in the final seconds, but the Owls were unable to get the equalizer at the end.
