4.6.19 | Men's Golf

PRINCETON, N.J. - Senior Gary McCabe turned in his best day as a Temple golfer, shooting a three-under 139 to lead the Owls to fourth-place tie after the first day at the Princeton Invitational.  As a team, Temple shot an even-par 568 for the first two rounds at the par-71, 6,424 Springdale Golf Club Saturday.

Recapping the Day
  • McCabe, who is tied for 8th overall, shot an even-par during the morning round, mixing in two birdies and two bogeys for a 71.   He then ran off six birdies, including five on his front nine, while again making just two bogeys for a 68 in the afternoon.  It was his first collegiate round in the 60s.
  • Senior Trey Wren shot a 68 in the morning round, making four birdies to just one bogey.  He was one-over for his afternoon round (3 birdies, 4 bogeys) for a 72. He is one shot back of McCabe and tied for 13th.
  • Redshirt senior John Barone went without a birdie in his opening round while carding a four-over 75.  He made up for that with six in the afternoon, but a bogey and double-bogey, had him finish with a two-under 69.  He stands tied for 33rd with a two-over 144.
  • Freshman Conor McGrath shot a four-over 146 (t49th) for the day, making five birdies on the day. His one-over 72 in the afternoon is his best round of the season.
  • Redshirt junior Erik Reisner started strong, shooting a one-under over his first nine courtesy of three birdies.   He would only add one more birdie on the day in shooting a nine-over 151 (t68th).
  • Playing as an individual, senior Sam Soeth recovered from a 77 to card a 68 in the afternoon round.   He had a team-best nine birdies on the day and is tied for 37th with a three-over 145.
The Field
  • Yale owns a seven stroke lead on the 13-team field with a 19-under 549.  Penn is in striking distance at 12-under (542) and the Quakers are followed by Loyola-Md. (566), with Columbia and Temple two strokes back at 568.
  • Yale's Teddy Zinser and Paul Stankey are tied for the lead with Princeton's Jake Mayer with eight-under 134s.
Quotable (Temple coach Brian Quinn)
  • "I am really proud of Gary (McCabe).  He played great. It has been a long time coming for him and hopefully will be a good confidence boost going forward."
  • "I am also proud of Conor McGrath).  He birdied the last hole for the first time all year a good way to finish."
  • "Trey played fantastic.  He could have shot 63, 64 if not for some unforced errors."
  • "I am happy the way John responded in the afternoon after a not so good first round for him."
  • "I was disappointed, however the way Trey and John at one point.  Those two guys played a three-hole stretch of six-over. They are our guys and that hurt."
  • "It will be really tough catching Yale now (the way we finished).  We just have to go out post a good round tomorrow."
