Men's Cross Country Places Third at Iona Meet of Champions

9.20.19 | Men's Cross Country

BRONX, N.Y.—The Temple men's cross country team earned third-place in the 25th annual Iona College Meet of Champions Friday morning at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. Senior Zach Seiger was the first Owl to cross the finish line with a time of 25:07.8, earning eighth overall in the 8K.

About the Meet of Champions
> Temple raced amongst 17 teams at Van Cortlandt Park, including four Division II squads and two Division III programs.
> The nationally ranked host No. 19 Iona secured first place with four runners finishing in the top-10.

Race Notes
> UNC Charlotte edged the Owls to grab second place in the meet. The 49ers saw three runners earn a top-10 finish.
> Harry Powell ran his best race in the Cherry and White uniform with his time of 25:17.1 to secure 13th overall. The redshirt-senior was followed closely by Kristian Jensen's 14th place finish (25:24.9) and Kevin Lapsansky's 15th place effort (25:27.4).
> David Westcott and Tom O'Keeffe rounded out the Temple top-five with respective times of 25.43.5 and 25:56.9.

From the Coach
> "I thought we were in a good position where we could have been fighting with UNC Charlotte and Iona—Iona had a really good group out there today and UNC Charlotte ran a really good race and ended up squeaking in front of us by a few points," commented head coach James Snyder. "With this really being the big opening race of our season, there was some rust to shake off and putting the spikes and uniform back on to go out there and actually be aggressive for the first time this fall. For where we are right now, I felt content with the outcome. Is there room for improvement? Of course, but I am certainly not disappointed in how the men raced today."

Up Next
> The Owls have a two-week break before returning to Lehigh University on October 5th for the 46th annual Paul Short Run in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
