Men's Soccer Heads to Penn for Philly Soccer Six Road Test
9.20.19 | Men's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA – Building off of back-to-back dominating wins, the Temple men's soccer squad looks to extend their win streak to three on Saturday when they head to University City to take on the Penn Quakers. The Owls' second Philly Soccer Six match-up of the year is set to begin at 7 p.m. under the lights at Rhodes Field.
Last Time Out
> The Owls are coming off of a pair of shutout wins over Lafayette and Delaware. Most recently, the squad downed the Blue Hens 1-0 on Tuesday night at the Temple Sports Complex, outshooting their opponents 23-0.
> Temple dominated possession for the entirety of the match, preventing Delaware from getting a single shot off during 90 minutes of play. The squad's second shutout out of the year was propelled by the backline of Pierre Cayet, Mickael Borger, Brandon Johnson and Esteban Suarez and backed by strong defensive efforts in Cherry and White all over the pitch.
> The first opportunity for Temple came in just the sixth minute when the squad found the back of the net, but the thought-to-be goal was ultimately called back. Freshman Amir Cohen rocketed a free kick into the goal box to find Cayet, who buried it on goal but was called offsides.
> Temple came out of the locker room fired up after out-shooting the Blue Hens 8-0 in the first 45 minutes of play. Just four minutes into the second half, the Owls notched the game winner after dominating possession the entire game. Senior Leandros Lillis exchanged a give-and-go with Cohen in the attacking third and fed the ball through to Lukas Fernandes. The senior captain then struck a low-driven ball to the left corner of net that ricocheted off the post and found Cohen, who buried it for his first goal in Cherry and White.
Scouting the Owls
> Temple has established itself as a force to be reckoned with over the first five games of the 2019 season. All three of the Owls' losses came from teams that were recognized in this week's United Soccer Coaches Poll, with Georgetown coming in at No. 3, Rutgers at No. 24 and Villanova receiving votes. The path for the Cherry and White continues to be paved with challenging opponents as five more teams on Temple's schedule also showed up in the polls, featuring No. 8 SMU, No. 9 St. John's, No. 13 UCF, Louisville (RV) and USF (RV).
> Fernandes currently leads the Temple offense with four points from two goals in four games played. The senior captain has fired off a team-high 20 shots with 13 on frame and netted the team's lone penalty kick of the year. He was named to the American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll as well as earning Philly Soccer Six Player of the Week honors on Monday after netting his first-ever collegiate brace against Lafayette in a 3-0 win.
> Cohen has made an early impact as a rookie midfielder for the Owls, dishing out a free-kick assist against Lafayette and scoring the game-winning goal against Delaware on Tuesday. The Givatayim, Israel native has played a key role in the Owls' offense, firing off nine shots from his midfield position.
> Senior Simon Lefebvre has played all 450 minutes between the posts for the Owls this season. In five games, the Ossun, France native has allowed five goals and saved 13 shots and has posted two shutouts on the season.
Scouting the Quakers
> Penn is coached by Brian Gill in his second year at the helm of the program. Currently sitting 2-1-1 on the season, he led the Quakers to a pair of wins over Monmouth and Marist in their first two contests. The past two games for Penn have been against nationally recognized opponents, as they fell 0-1 at No. 19 St. John's last Friday followed by a 1-1 draw against No. 24 Rutgers on Tuesday night.
> No. 24 Rutgers got on the board early against the Quakers thanks to a converted penalty kick in the ninth minute of play. After extended bursts of even game-action, Penn was able to equalize in the 70th minute thanks to an Alex Touche goal.
> Joey Bhangdia currently leads the widely-distributed Quaker offense with four points from two goals. The junior has fired off a team-high 14 shots with five on goal in his four games played and led Penn with five shots in the team's draw against No. 24 Rutgers. Touche's critical goal against Rutgers puts him on the Penn scoresheets with two points, matching him with Kai Lammers (1 goal) and Brandon Bartel (2 assists).
> Dane Jacomen has played all 380 minutes in net for the Quakers, accumulating a 2-1-1 record between the posts and earning two shutouts on the season. The sophomore has only allowed two goals to slip past him this season and has saved nine shots that have come his way.
