TAMPA, Fla. — The Temple volleyball team fell 3-0 on the road at USF on Friday night, opening conference play with a 25-22, 25-19, 25-18 loss to the Bulls. The Owls move to 9-3 on the season, while USF improves to 7-8.
Keys to the Match
> USF was on the better end of two tight sets to start the match, using late runs in each frame to go up 2-0.
> The Bulls had a fast start to set three, opening an eight point lead, before the Owls cut it to two down the stretch.
> Temple's late rally came up short, however, as USF was able to close things out, earning the sweep.
> USF out-hit Temple .274 to .137, while digs were 43-39 in their favor.
Quotable: Head Coach Bakeer Ganesharatnam
> "I just don't think we were able to control the ball very well. We started pretty well on offense, but we couldn't keep it up. The first set was close, within one point late, but then South Florida just made one more push and I think we fell apart too easily."
> "We have to remind ourselves that this is part of the process. But we have to find a way to regroup and come up with solutions. It's part of the process, but we need to step up and play more disciplined on a consistent basis."
Individual Highlights
> Sophomore Tyler Lindgren dished out 27 assists, including the 1,000th of her career.
> Sophomore Peyton Boyd had a solid night offensively, racking up 12 kills, hitting .400.
> Junior Averi Salvador led the Owls with 14 digs, while classmate Katerina Papazoglou added seven.
> Elsewhere, sophomore Gem Grimshaw and freshman Kayla Spells each had five kills.
Set One: USF 25, Temple 22
> An ultra close first set featured 10 lead changes before settling on an 11-11 tie.
> USF broke through to take over momentum, going up 15-12, but Temple battled back to knot it three more times, including 22-22.
> From there however, the Bulls finished it out with three straight points to take set one.
Set Two: USF 25, Temple 19
> Temple had the early edge in the second frame, but USF battled back to tie at 9-9.
> The Bulls continued their run out of a Temple timeout, pushing the score to 19-12.
> The Owls got the lead down to four (22-18), but USF again closed out the set win.
Set Three: USF 25, Temple 18
> It was all USF in the early part of the set, as the Bulls scored the first five points of the game and ran out to a 12-4 lead.
> Temple chipped away at the USF advantage, getting it all the way down to two points at 16-14.
