AKRON, Ohio – Sophomore Conor McGrath had his best collegiate round of golf in the morning while junior Dawson Anders did the same while also making a hole-in-one in the afternoon to lead Temple Golf to a ninth place showing among the 15 competing teams on the first day of competition at the 2019 Firestone Invitational Monday.

Recapping the Day

> McGrath, who is tied for the tournament lead with 11 birdies, shot a three-under 69 in his first round, his best as an Owl.   He made six birdies on his afternoon round, but a triple bogey on his 17th hole (hole 9) pushed his score to a one-over 73.  He sits at two-under for the tournament and tied for seventh.
> Anders, who struggled with an eight-over 80 in the morning, was sizzling in the afternoon.  He shot a five-under 67, with a hole-in-one followed by an eagle.  He also added in five birdies.  He easily could have shot even better, but a double-bogey on his 17th hole hurt his final score.
>On his rare ace, Anders used a six iron off the 17th tee to land the ball directly into the cup without hitting the ground.  It was the first hole-in-one by an Owl since Evan Thornton made one the 16th at the Furman Intercollegiate in 2015. He followed that with one of the longest drives off the tee in Temple history, connecting for 361 yards, without the aid of wind, to position himself for his eagle.  He is tied for 25th with a three-over 147.
> Freshman Graham Chase was next for the Owls, following a par 72 in the morning with a 77 in the afternoon for a plus-five 149 (tie-46th).
> Senior Liam McGrath shot an eight-over 152 to tie for 57th and sophomore Buddy Hansen (159, t-77th) rounded out the Owls' five.

The Field

> South Carolina Aiken (566) leads host Akron and Old Dominion by one stroke (567).  The Owls are 23 shots off the pace at 590.
> Akron's Fabian Sunden and Old Dominion's Gustav Fransson are tied for the individual lead with a five-under 139.

Quotable

> "He is really good," said Temple coach Brian Quinn on Dawson Anders. "He got out of sorts this morning and struggled.  He rebounded in the afternoon with an incredible round, making a hole in one and an eagle on back to back holes. He should have shot even better, but for a double bogey on his 17th hole."
>"Conor played great all day but had a tough finish with a triple bogey on his next to last hole of the day.  That was a killer but he played great golf," said Quinn on Conor McGrath.
> "When I hit it I knew it was going to the pin," said Dawson Anders on his hole in one.  "I heard it hit the pin, but could not tell if it was going in or bounced off."
