Women’s Basketball Hosts SMU for First Home Game of the New Year

PHILADELPHIA — The Temple women's basketball team returns home for the first time in the New Year as they welcome SMU to McGonigle Hall on Saturday, Jan. 11 for a 3 p.m. conference tip-off.

THE OWLS
> Temple enters their first home game of 2020 on a three-game winning streak. The Owls are 9-6 overall and 2-1 in conference action.  
> Mia Davis has registered a double-double in the last six games as she averages a double-double of 18.8 points and 10.9 rebounds per game to lead the Owls. Davis also leads the conference on the boards. 
> Davis totals 10 double-doubles thus far this season, tying with three other players for second-most double-doubles in the country. 
> Ashley Jones is the Owls' second highest scorer with 16.9 points per game. Jones also registers 5.2 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game.
> Freshman Asonah Alexander leads both Temple and the American in assists per game with 4.9. Her assist/turnover ratio of 3.0 is also a conference-best. The playmaking rookie adds 6.1 points and 5.7 rebounds each game.
> Marissa Mackins is Temple's third player to average double-digit points with her 13.1 efforts each game.
> Lena Niang rounds out the Owls' top five scorers with 7.1 points per game. The graduate student is second on the boards for Temple, pulling down 6.1 per outing.

LAST TIME OUT: Temple 61, Houston 58
> Temple won their third-straight game on Jan. 8 at Houston, 61-58. 
> The Owls held a 50-35 edge on the boards, 23 of which came on the offensive end. 
> Both teams saw similar field goal percentages with Temple slightly outshooting the Cougars 35.7% to 34.5%.
> The Temple bench added 31 points to the winning effort. 
> For the second consecutive game, the Owls shot under 30% from three-point range, finishing 24% from beyond the arc (6-for-25). Houston finished 31.8% from three point land. 
> Jones led all players with 23 points shooting 55.6% from three-point range as she hit a career-best five treys. She added five rebounds and two steals to her stat line.
> Williamson added nine points, five rebounds and a season-high three blocks. 
> Atkinson registered eight points while Niang chipped in five. 
> Alexander and Mackins both led the Owls with three assists apiece. 

SCOUTING SMU
> The Mustangs enter the game with an overall record of 7-7 and a conference mark of 1-1. 
> SMU is second in the conference in blocked shots as they average 4.8 per outing. Johnasia Cash registers 1.8 blocks a game to rank third in the American. 
> Cash leads the Mustangs with 9.7 rebounds per game, falling right behind Mia Davis to rank second in the American. 
> The Mustangs are third in the conference with 213 offensive rebounds on the year, averaging 16.4 each game. 
> Reagan Bradley leads SMU in the assist column with 4.6 per contest, which ranks behind Asonah Alexander for second in the league. 
> Kayla White is the Mustangs' top scorer with her 10.4 points per game. Cash adds 9.9 a game, while Bradley averages 9.7.

LAST TIME OUT: SMU 55, ECU 47
> The Mustangs topped ECU 55-47 on Wednesday, Jan. 8 in Greenville, N.C. to claim their first American victory of the season. 
> SMU outrebounded the Pirates, 43-27.
> The Mustangs also outshot ECU from the floor (39.2% to 29.7%), from three-point range (37.5% to 16.7%) and from the foul line (80% to 58.3%). 
> Kayla White led SMU with 18 points on 7-for-10 shooting from the floor. She added six rebounds and a steal in the win. 
> Johnasia Cash and JaQuia White chipped in nine points apiece, while Cash led the Mustangs on the boards with eight rebounds. 
> Amber Bacon dished out a game-high six assists and netted six points.

TEMPLE VS. SMU
> Temple leads 6-4 in the all-time series against SMU.
> The first meeting between the two programs occurred on Jan. 14, 2014 in McGonigle Hall, where the Owls topped the Mustangs 80-66.
> SMU won the last matchup against Temple on Feb. 20, 2019 as they handed the Owls a heartbreaking 53-52 loss. 

LAST TIME THEY MET: SMU 53, Temple 52
> SMU won the last battle against the Owls 53-52 on Feb. 20 in Dallas, Texas. 
> Temple trailed by as many as 17 points, before a massive 25-2 run gave the Owls a 51-41 lead with under two minutes to play.
> From there, SMU put together a 12-1 closing surge, including a game-tying three with 16 seconds left.
> An Owls free throw made it 52-51, but SMU got a driving lay-up to get the win.
> Temple shot just 21.4% in the first half, going 6-28 from the field and 2-13 from three.
> SMU racked up a 26-16 advantage on the glass in the first 20 minutes.
> For the game, the hosts finished with a slight edge shooting (37.9% to 34.6%) and also held a slim 37-35 lead on the glass.
> Davis led the Owls with 20 points and nine rebounds.
> Alliya Butts finished with eight points, seven assists, and five steals.
> Mackins and Niang each added nine points in the loss.
