Track and Field Debuts 2020 Slate at Penn 8-Team Select

PHILADELPHIA – Following a five week hiatus from competition over the holiday break, the Temple track and field team has returned to make its 2020 debut at the Penn 8-Team Select on Saturday, Jan. 18. The Owls will head to Staten Island, N.Y. to compete on the hydraulically-banked track at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex as they look to build off of a pair of successful meets back in early December.
About the Penn 8-Team Select
> The Penn 8-Team Select, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania, is set to begin at 4 p.m. Sydney Williams and Blair Knuckle will get the action started for the Owls, competing in the 60m hurdle prelims at 4 p.m. sharp, with finals set for 4:45 p.m. Simultaneously, Candus Burks, Zowie Dahn, Kayla Nesbitt-McEwen and Knuckle will represent Temple in the long jump to get the field events started for the day.
> At 4:20 p.m., Madison Beecher, Chelby Elam, Brielle Lewis, Tannekee Strachan, Williams, Nesbitt-McEwen and Dahn are each slated for the 60m dash. Finals for the event are scheduled for 4:55 p.m.
> A slew of distance runners will make their 2020 track debuts in the mile at 5 p.m. Millie Howard, Michelle Joyce, Grace Moore, Emma Seifried, Mikaela Vlasic and Lexi Walsh are all set to compete in the 1600m run following successful cross country seasons.
> At 5:55 p.m., Deyona Banks, Sophia Gulotti, Mallorie Smith, Marissa White and Knuckle are set to race the 400m dash. Then, Knuckle will be the sole competitor for the Owls in the high jump at 6 p.m., while Burks and Strachan will compete in the triple jump at 6 p.m. as well.
> Helene Gottlieb, Alanna Lally and Vlasic will all compete in the 800m at 6:30 p.m., followed by Beecher, Elam, Lewis, Smith, White and Williams in the 200m at 7 p.m. For the final individual event of the day, Gottlieb, Howard, Joyce, Moore, Seifried, Walsh and Cat Shontz will race the 3K at 7:30 p.m. The meet will conclude with the 4x4 at 8:15 p.m.

> The Owls are coming off of a two-meet weekend that wrapped up competition for 2019, opening the year at the Fast Track Season Opener on Dec. 6 and returning to Ocean Breeze for the Bill Ward Invitational on Dec. 8.
> At the Fast Track Season Opener, Williams opened the meet with a second-place finish in the 60m hurdle prelims. The junior clocked in at her fastest-ever time of 8.81, advancing to finals where she placed third overall.
> White quickly returned to her winning ways in her first 400m back on the track since her standout freshman campaign. The sophomore sprinter clocked in at 55.76, nearly beating her best-ever indoor time in the event of 55.20 to win the 43-person field. Another Temple standout, Brown debuted her talents in the high jump to take home a gold medal with a mark of 1.70m.
> The newcomer duo of Lally and Vlasic had a stellar showing in their first race on the track in Cherry and White. Lally, a redshirt senior from Galway, Ireland, took silver in the 1000m with a time of 2:57.39 to kick off the season. Vlasic, a junior transfer from Pitt, finished her first track race as an Owl in 2:57.70 to take third overall. Elam also logged her first race as an Owl on Friday, taking the top spot for Temple in the 60m dash with a time of 7.86 to finish sixth in the 63-person field.
> On Sunday, the Bill Ward Invitational was highlighted by seven individual titles for the Cherry and White. Williams, White, Smith, Walsh, Burks, Brown and the 4x4 relay each returned to north Philadelphia with a gold medal to conclude the 2019 portion of the indoor season.
