10.19.20 | Football

This Week
After their first win of the season, the Owls are back on the road this weekend as they travel to Tennessee to take on the Memphis Tigers on October 24. Kickoff is set for 12:00pm and will air on ESPN+ and 97.5 The Fanatic.

Last Week
The Owls won their first game of the season last Saturday, defeating USF by a score of 39-37. Trailing by 11 points late in the third quarter, Temple scored three touchdowns in just over 11 minutes to retake the lead, 39-31, and then stopped USF on its two-point try in the final minute to secure a win in its home opener at Lincoln Financial Field. Temple quarterback Anthony Russo had another stellar offensive game, completing 30-of-42 passes for 270 yards and four touchdowns. Russo connected with six different receivers throughout the game with Jadan Blue (9-60-2) and Randle Jones (8-81-1) leading the way. Wide receiver Branden Mack caught Russo's other touchdown pass, a 12-yard pitch and catch late in the third quarter. Re'Mahn Davis did the bulk of the work on the ground, rushing 25 times for 83 yards while Tayvon Ruley also had a strong game with six carries for 39 yards. It was the Owls' defense that came up big in the end, however, as defensive end Arnold Ebiketie (6 tackles) picked up a fumble with just under 10 minutes to play and ran 11 yards to paydirt to give Temple the lead for good, 32-31.  After Russo's fourth passing touchdown of the game, USF responded with a touchdown of their own with just over a minute remaining, giving the Bulls a chance to tie the game. Amir Tyler then kept the Bulls from tying the score with a big tackle on the ensuing two-point conversion with 1:03 remaining.

Last Time vs. Memphis
The last time that Temple played 23rd ranked Memphis was October 12 of last season when the Owls came out with a 30-28 victory on homecoming. The Owls got off to a hot start, thanks in large part to three field goals by Will Mobley within 18 minutes of the opening whistle. An opening one-yard touchdown from Jager Gardner meant that Temple had a 16-0 lead midway through the second quarter. After exchanging touchdowns thoughout the second and third quarters, Anthony Russo found Branden Mack for a 12-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter to extend the Owls lead to 30-21. A late Memphis touchdown made for an anxious finish but Temple held on for the win. The win meant that Rod Carey became the first Temple head coach since Wayne Hardin in 1979 to start a season 5-1, and it was the first time in Temple's history that a team beat two ranked teams in a season.

Last Time vs. Memphis @ Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium
The last time that the Owls and the Tigers met at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium was back in 2016 when the Owls lost a hard fought game, 34-27. Temple was fast out of the gates, taking a 13-0 lead with just over two minutes to play in the first half, thanks to two field goals from Austin Jones and a Ryquell Armstead touchdown. From there, the Tigers scored 27 unanswered points to put the Owls in a 14-point hole with just over eight minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. A 61-yard touchdown pass from P.J. Walker to Jahad Thomas shortly after gave the Owls life again, but a 95-yard kickoff return on the ensuing kick all but ended the Owls chances. Another touchdown pass from Walker to Thomas cut the deficit to seven, but a game-ending interception on Temple's final drive ended the contest.

Up Next
The Owls have their only back-to-back road games of the season as they travel to New Orleans to take on Tulane. Kickoff is set for 12:00pm and will air on ESPN+ and 97.5 The Fanatic.
