Naomi Ross Named Elite by USOPC
10.29.20 | Women's Fencing
PHILADELPHIA - Under new NCAA legislation this year, Temple fencer Naomi Ross is among those designated as "elite" by the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee and other national governing bodies, a recognition that identifies potential U.S. Olympians in 2021.
As a potential Olympian, Ross will be allowed to have travel expenses paid for, and will be able to spend more time working with coaches in preparation for the 2021 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Despite fencing for the Owls, the Aurora, Colo., native would represent the U.S. as a modern pentathlete, competing in fencing, freestyle swimming, equestrian show jumping, pistol shooting, and cross country.Â
"Naomi is an outstanding athlete who, through her dedication and determination, has worked hard to become a member of the U.S. Pentathlon National Team," head coach Dr. Nikki Franke said. "As her coaches, we are very proud of what she is accomplishing and hope her continued success. Her fencing skill and energy has been a tremendous asset to our team."
Ross had a standout first year as an Owl, going 49-22 in dual play as an epeeist. Placing seventh at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional to qualify for the NCAA Championships, which were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, she was named Second Team All-Region and Second Team All-American by the USFCA.
