11.11.20 | Women's Basketball
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Senior Mia Davis has been named to the 2021 Cheryl Miller Award watch list, as announced by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women's Basketball Coaches Association Wednesday afternoon.Â
The annual award in its fourth year recognizes the top small forwards in Women's NCAA Division I college basketball and is named in honor of three-time Naismith Player of the Year, Cheryl Miller.Â
Along with being named to the Cheryl Miller Award watch list for the second-straight season, Davis enters her fourth year on Broad Street as the American Athletic Conference co-Preseason Player of the Year and a top-25 candidate for the 2021 Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year award.Â
Davis led the Owls with her double-double of 18.8 points and 10.2 rebounds per game. The senior forward collected 18 double-doubles last season and scored double-digit points in 28 games, including 14 contests with 20+ points.Â
"We're ecstatic that Mia has been honored as one of the country's top small forwards for the second season in-a-row," commented head women's basketball coach Tonya Cardoza. "It's great to see people recognizing her hardwork and dedication. We're excited to see what she accomplishes this year."Â
College basketball fans are encouraged to participate in Fan Voting presented by Dell Technologies in each of the three rounds. In early February, the watch list of 20 players for the 2021 Cheryl Miller Award will be narrowed to just 10. In early March, five finalists will be presented to Ms. Miller and the Hall of Fame's selection committee.Â
The winner of the 2021 Cheryl Miller Small Forward Award will be presented on Friday, April 9, 2021, along with the other four members of the Women's Starting Five. Additional awards being presented include the Nancy Lieberman Point Guard Award, the Ann Meyers Drysdale Shooting Guard Award, the Katrina McClain Power Forward Award, and the Lisa Leslie Center Award, in addition to the Men's Starting Five.
Previous winners of the Cheryl Miller Small Forward of the Year Award include Satou Sabally, Oregon (2020), Bridget Carleton, Iowa State (2019) and Gabby Williams, Connecticut (2018).
