Dawson Malcolm: Charting a Course for his Future
12.16.20 | Men's Crew
Dawson Malcolm has been able to build up an impressive resume, while competing on the Temple Men's Crew team. Even though he is just completing his fifth semester in college, Malcolm has begun to bolster his professional network through prestigious internships.
Â
Starting in January of 2020, he completed an internship with PA State Representative Martina White, who represents the170th District within Philadelphia. Following his time with Representative White, he began working with local Criminal Defense Attorney Brandi L. McLaughlin as an intern, which Malcolm explained as "one of the greatest opportunities I have had at Temple."
Â
Malcolm's interest in the political process has driven his choice to enter this field.
Â
"I love the way that the system, the many systems of the United States government work, it's such a fascinating career", explained Malcolm. "The way that power shifts has always been such a fascinating thing and it is something that I want to work within."
Â
The political sphere holds infinite career opportunities. Students of politics can enter fields such as law, public service, policy making, lobbying, campaigns and much more. For Malcolm, it is policy making that draws his interest.
Â
"I think for me it (policy making) is one of the most fascinating parts about the government" said Malcolm. "Congress is such a flawed and imperfect system, yet it is so important, and it is such a defining factor in our politics."
Â
Similar to career fields, there is a diverse list of options for advanced degrees that people entering the political sphere can pursue in order to set themselves apart. These can range from master's in public policy or administration, law school, MBA or many others. For Malcolm law school is what yields the best skillset for a career in policy making.
Â
Malcolm is certain that law school is in his future, however, he may take some time to gain professional perspective following his undergraduate degree. He has laid out potential options such as the Peace Corps or pursuing a Fulbright Scholarship. The when and where may not be solidified, but Malcolm is certain that Law School is in his future and he will take the LSAT's next fall.
Â
The junior political science major's future is bright for several reasons. He has continued to take advantage of limited free time to take prestigious internships. In addition, Malcolm has pointed to his experienced and brilliant professors in guiding him along his journey.
Â
No matter how the specifics play out, the future is incredibly bright for Dawson Malcolm and he is paving his lane to be a young societal leader.
