Gymnastics Wins Unite for Her Pink Meet

2.21.20 | Women's Gymnastics

PHILADELPHIA — The Temple gymnastics team won the Unite for Her "Pink Meet" at the Philadelphia Convention Center on Friday night. Led by a program record 9.95 on bars from senior captain Jazmyn Estrella, the Owls tallied a 194.45, their second highest score of the season. Temple topped Illinois State (193.80), West Chester (192.00), Southern Connecticut State (190.25) and Ursinus (186.20), winning three of the four events.

Beam
> Temple opened the competition on beam, posting a 48.825, which ranks as the sixth highest total in program history.
> Estrella and junior Delaney Garin led Temple with matching scores of 9.80, sharing the event title.
> Sophomores Ariana Castrence and Taylor Newland each ranked fourth overall on the event, with scores of 9.750.
> Junior Jordyn Oster posted a solid 9.725, while freshman Madison Brooks rounded out the rotation with a 9.625.
 
Floor
> Temple combined for a floor score of 48.675, the best total in the meet. 
> Garin dazzled with a 9.825 to tie for second on the event, while Oster and junior Tori Edwards each finished at 9.775.
> Senior Jaylene Everett recorded a 9.700, while Newland (9.600) and Castrence (9.550) also scored well.
 
Vault
> Temple tallied a 48.675 on vault to top all five teams at the event.
> Castrence was the Owls' top scorer, nabbing a 9.850 to win the event title.
> Estrella (9.750) and Edwards (9.725) also turned in top-five vault scores.
> Brooks recorded a 9.700 and Everett added a 9.650 to finish out the solid rotation.

Bars
> Temple closed out the competition with a 48.275 on bars.
> Estrella's school record 9.95 was the highlight, as she won the event title and was the only gymnast at the meet with a bars score over 9.875. Her 9.95 was the highest score of any Temple gymnast on any event since 2002.
> Castrence ranked fourth on the event, recording a career-best score of 9.850 
> Edwards and Brooks wrapped up the highlights for the Owls with matching scores of 9.725.
 
From the Coach
> "TUG had a great night tonight," said head coach Josh Nilson. "I am proud of these ladies. We had a lot of positives, including Jazmyn Estrellla breaking the all-time high score on bars with a 9.95. This team score will replace a 190 in our NQS. We are back in action Sunday and out to replace anonther score."
 
Up Next
> The Cherry and White have a quick turnaround, as they compete again on Sunday. The team will travel to George Washington to compete in a quad meet against GWU, NC State, and Northern Illinois beginning at 1:00 p.m.
