No. 5 Fencing Set for NCAA Regionals

3.6.20 | Women's Fencing

PHILADELPHIA - The No. 5 Temple fencing team will head to Durham, N.C. for the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional on Saturday. The Owls will look to qualify as many fencers for the NCAA Championship as possible, with 12 athletes going to Regionals.

Each weapon will be well represented, with Aryana Abtin, Kennedy Lovelace, Megan Ross, and Cassie Navalta making up the foil squad, Malia Hee, Kerry Plunkett, and Zoe Turner to represent sabre, and Margherita Calderaro, Naomi Ross, Marielle Luke, Quinn Duwelius, and Sarah Park to round out the epee squad.

The Owls most recently competed at the NIWFA Championships, sweeping every award. The team earned its 25th consecutive NIWFA Championship, swept the weapon titles for the first time since 2015, and swept the individual titles for the first time since 2014. Lovelace earned the foil title, Turner earned the sabre title, and Calderaro earned the epee title.

Temple went 31-9 in dual competition this season, earning several wins from Top-10 opponents. The team defeated No. 1 Notre Dame, No. 9 Northwestern, No. 6 Penn State, and No. 10 Penn, among others.

Three Owls qualified for the NCAA Championships last season, with alumna Blessing Olaode earning an automatic bid after winning the sabre title at Regionals. Plunkett and Lovelace were selected by the NCAA Men's and Women's Fencing Committee after finishing fourth and third in their respective weapons at Regionals. Plunkett and Olaode would go on to earn All-American Honorable Mention, finishing in ninth and 12th in sabre, respectively.

Foil and epee will begin competition at 9 a.m., with sabre to begin at 10 a.m. For all three weapons, fencers will compete in the play-in rounds to qualify for the quarterfinals bracket.

The qualification for the NCAA Championship is based on a formula comprising of a 60 percent weight on regional performance and 40 percent on regular-season meets. Regional champions for each weapon automatically advance, with remaining bids going to fencers based on performance and the region they compete in (seven spots are available in each weapon from the Mid-Atlantic/South Region).

The NCAA selections will be announced on March 10. At the NCAA Championships, each weapon field will consist of the top 24 fencers from across the nation. For the regional meet, the 36 fencers in each weapon will compete until 12 remain, and those 12 will battle in a round robin final.
