AIKEN, S.C. – Temple Golf started slowly, but moved up to tie for 10th place after the first day of play at the 23rd Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate Monday. The 15-team tournament, being held at the Palmetto Golf Club's par-70, 6,617-yard course, will conclude with 18 holes Tuesday.
Recapping the Day
> Temple's top golfer, Dawson Anders, started slow, bogeying his first hole and falling to six over par after 10. The junior captain then went five under the rest of the round, making four birdies and an eagle on the par 5 10th to close the opening round in a tie for 17th with a one-over 70.
> Anders opened his afternoon round with a bogey, but rebounded with a birdy on his second hole. He played even the rest of the round, balancing two bogeys with two birdies for a par 70. He is tied for ninth with a one-over 141, eight shots off the lead.
> Freshman Graham Chase made 16 pars on his opening round, but had two tough holes, a quintuple bogey on the third and a double bogey on the 10th that had him finish with a seven over 77.
> In his afternoon round, Chase fired off three straight birdies and finished with a two-over 72. He sits in second place for the Owls and tied for 41st with a nine-over 149.
> Sophomore Anthony Barr had three birdies in his opening round to help offset three bogeys and a double bogey on the 5th hole to card a two-over 73 and tie for 26th.
> Sophomore Conor McGrath rebounded from a six-over opening round (77) to shoot a four-over 74 in the afternoon. He had four birdies on the day and is tied with Barr for 54th place at 11-over (151).
> Senior Liam McGrath struggled on the day, carding a 77 in the morning and followed that with an 80. He is tied for 71st overall with a 157.
The Field
> Two ACC schools, Clemson and Virginia, dominated play on day one with the Tigers holding a two stroke lead over the Cavaliers. Furman is a distant third, 23 strokes off the lead.
> Clemson golfers Jacob Bridgeman and Turk Pettit share the lead at seven-under (133). Virginia's Jimmie Massie is three strokes back with a four-under 136.
Quotable
"Dawson played solid for us today and Graham played really well too with the exception of just two really bad holes.
We are a better team than how we scored. A couple of players need to step up and play smart out on the golf course. This is a strong field and a tough course, but if we do everything we are supposed to tomorrow we can make up some more ground." – Temple coach Brian Quinn
