Senior Spotlight: Evan Funchion, Crew
4/10/2020
A four-year member of the Owls, Funchion has been one of Temple’s top coxswains throughout his career. From his first year on campus, he guided the Owls’ varsity boats down the Schuylkill, racking up numerous medals. Funchion coxed gold medal boats as a freshman in the varsity four (Bergen Cup, Frostbite Regatta) and the second varsity eight (Jacksonville Sprints). As a sophomore, he left his mark on the program by coxing the gold-medal winning second varsity eight boat at the 2018 Dad Vail Regatta, helping the Owls to a historic sweep of the top eights. Funchion competed with the Temple 2V8 at the IRA Championships and made the Henley Royal Regatta roster, pulling double duty by coxing both the varsity eight and varsity four boats most of the trip. As a junior and senior, he found success as the varsity eight coxswain, including leading the Owls to the overall points trophy at the 2019 Dad Vail Regatta. Funchion will graduate from the Fox School of Business in May with a degree in Marketing.
Owlsports.com caught up with Funchion, as he finishes his degree at Temple.

In the book of your life, what’s the title of the Temple chapter? No one outworks a Temple Guy.

What’s the best part about being a member of the crew team at Temple/what will you miss the most? There are so many things that I’ll miss being on the team. In particular, I’m going to miss the team atmosphere. We have built a very family based culture over the years. Although there may be some disagreements on the water, I know that every member of the team would "go to war” for each other. Even though we have a team of close to 60, I felt like I could have a conversation with every member of the team.

What is your favorite memory of being a student-athlete at Temple? Spring season of 2018: winning Dad Vails, competing at IRAs and then being able to attend the Henley Royal Regatta. These were bucket list items an life-long memories

If you could give advice to your freshman year self, what would it be? Patience, patience, patience.

Where do you see yourself in five years? In five years I’d really like to have a successful career in advertising

There are so many people that I’d really like to thank. First and foremost, my Mom who has continually support me through ups and downs. Next, I’d like to thank Coach Perkins. He was the first coach I spoke to in the recruiting process and from the moment I stepped on campus for my visit, I knew that it was home. I’d also like the thank all of our amazing assistant coaches like Scott Waters and Devon Teichman for being like big brothers to me over the years. Finally a big thank you to everyone involved in Temple Athletics from the academic staff to the media staff.Evan Funchion, Temple Crew Class of 2020
