Davis Highlights Big 5 Awards with Player of the Year Honor

PHILADELPHIA — The Temple women's basketball trio of Mia Davis, Ashley Jones and Marissa Mackins were honored with Philadelphia Big 5 awards, as announced by the league Friday.Ā

Davis highlighted the awards for the Owls as she was named the Big 5 Player of the Year and earned a spot on the All-Big 5 First Team. The junior captain finished the season averaging 18.8 points and 10.2 rebounds per game. Davis recorded 18 double-doubles, which ranked sixth in the country. The Baltimore, Md. native adds her Big 5 honors to a year full of accolades, including USBWA All-American Honorable Mention, Cheryl Miller Award Top 10 Finalist and First Team All-American Athletic Conference. Davis continues to climb into Temple women's basketball history as she sits at ninth in both career points (1,460) and career rebounds (802).Ā

Jones earned All-Big 5 Second Team following an impressive inaugural season in the Cherry and White. The redshirt sophomore added 16.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and a team-best 4.2 assists per game. Jones led the Owls in both three-point percentage (33.3%) and free throw percentage (79.8%). She finished her first season on Broad Street as the American Athletic Conference Newcomer of the Year and was tabbed Second Team All-Conference.Ā

Mackins also earned a spot on All-Big 5 Second Team after a solid sophomore campaign. The Durham, N.C. native averaged 12.3 points and 2.5 three-pointers per game. She ended the year with 76 threes, ranking third in Temple women's basketball history in most made three-pointers in a single season. Mackins was named both the Big 5 and American Athletic Conference Player of the Week following her 28-point performance after knocking down a career-best seven treys at La Salle on Dec. 30.
The Owls won a share of the 2019-20 Philadelphia Big 5 title after an exhilarating 76-72 come-from-behind-win over Penn on Jan. 17. Villanova was named co-Big 5 champions alongside Temple.Ā
